Tom Top Ten: Family

I'm back with another edition of my Tom Top Ten! This is the sixth in a series of mini (just 10 pics each) picspams in celebration of Tom Welling, highlighting the wonderful performances he gives us, episode after episode. I call this one Family.

1) 1.09 - Rogue. Jonathan is in jail, framed by Sam Phelan in an attempt to blackmail Clark. Clark will do anything to protect his family, and is frightened by where his anger almost took him. Even behind glass, father and son reach out to one another, and Jonathan tells Clark that if he crosses that line he can never come back. Tom shows us Clark's fear, his desperation to keep his parents safe, and the resolve he gains from the strength of Jonathan's convictions.

2) 2.17 - Rosetta. The Kent family discusses what Clark should do next after receiving the email from Dr. Virgil Swann. Clark's parents want only to protect their son, but he is determined to pursue the truth about his origins. Tom perfectly portrays Clark's anguish about the mysteries that surround him, and a boy's first tentative steps toward adulthood as he makes a decision his parents never would.

3) 3.19 - Memoria. After his ordeal at Summerholt, Clark retreats to his loft to think. Martha seeks him out, worried, and offers to listen if he wants to talk. He reveals the memory he recovered of his birth mother, Lara, and Martha shares with him that her name was his first word. Clark tells Martha he wishes Lara could have met her, to see what a great mom she is, and they hug. It's a poignant moment, and Tom leaves us with no doubt about what both Martha and Lara mean to Clark.

4) 4.06 - Transference. In this episode it's a Luthor family moment that stands out because of Tom's acting. Clark and Lionel have switched bodies, and Lionel goes to confront Lex about his missing millions. Tom captures Lionel in every nuance and detail as father attacks son, showing us first contempt, then rage, and finally murderous intent. Fans and critics alike are blown away by his performance.

5) 4.07 - Jinx. Jonathan is dead set against Clark continuing to play football after he inexplicably trips during a game and injures another player. Clark knows he has to play, and he also knows he can control himself. When Jonathan confronts his son as he heads for the field, Clark stands firm, reminding his father that he can never truly understand what it means to be a Kryptonian in a human world. With the love and lessons his parents have given him, the boy is ready to become a man. Tom makes us realize how far Clark has come, and how far he will one day go.

6) 4.11 - Unsafe. Clark is back from his aborted Las Vegas honeymoon, and his parents are furious. As Martha rails at him in the Kent kitchen, Clark is in tears, devastated because Alicia used Red!K on him and shattered his hopes for a future with her, but even more so because his parents are bitterly disappointed in him, and will never understand how he feels when he's with her. Tom breaks our hearts with Clark's sorrow and loneliness.

7) 5.08 - Solitude. After almost losing Martha to Milton Fine's mysterious Kryptonian illness, Clark experiences the staggering epiphany all children have when they first face their parents' mortality. He tells his mother she is his heart, his soul, and holds her like he'll never let go. Tom makes us understand how important this woman, who opened her heart to a tiny boy from beyond the stars, will always be to the future Man of Steel.

8) 6.09 - Subterranean. When Martha discovers that Clark is harboring an undocumented immigrant boy, she is outraged. Clark is in turn dismayed by her attitude, and reminds her that he is the ultimate illegal alien, who understands Javier's plight all too well. Tom shows us that Clark has become a man of his own convictions, willing to stand in defiance of his mother's wishes when he believes he's right.

9) 7.02 - Kara. Clark's cousin Kara is new to Earth and the superpowers our yellow sun gives her. To help her find her missing ship, Clark teaches her how to use her newly enhanced hearing to focus in on its unique alarm frequency. It's a wonderful callback to S3's Whisper, when Clark's parents helped him gain control of his own superhearing, and Tom introduces us to a whole new side of Clark, who mentors Kara as she struggles to adjust to life on a different planet.

10) 8.08 - Bloodline. Trapped in the Phantom Zone, Kara has given up, and tells Clark to leave her behind. He refuses, and fiercely tells her what she means to him, finally breaking through her despair and bringing hope back to life. Tom gives us a scene of extraordinary emotion, heartfelt and moving in its intensity.

I LOVE THESE PICSPAMS. That cap of Clark hugging Martha f. Shelby is so freaking cute.

Thanks!! I'm glad you like them, they're a lot of fun to put together.

I love that pic, Martha is so tiny and her "little boy" is so huge! :)

The dynamic between Clark and Kara was definitely one of my favorite things about S7. I miss LV, and I thought she was wonderful on the show. I was happy to see her come back for Bloodline. She and Tom had amazing chemistry, I thought. They truly seemed like a big brother and little sister to me. Or cousins. :)

I still mourn Martha's (and AOT's) departure from the show. She has always been a critical part of the Superman story.

I'm so glad you enjoyed it! I love putting these together, and losing myself in rewatching all my favorite moments along the way.

Oh, lovely. So many wonderful moments, all expressed beautifully and heart-wrenchingly by Tom.

Clark's words in that scene were a defining moment in the series for me. They really got to the heart of the constant emotional difficulty it is to be Clark Kent. It's still one of my all-time favorite SV scenes.

Thanks for sharing this in the comm.!

I was inspired to do this series because of constantly seeing people say Tom can't act, and because many people assume I only like him because he's pretty. As an actor, he touches my heart, and this scene is an exceptional moment in that regard. His performance is quiet, yet passionate, and I found myself quite moved by it. It will always be a favorite of mine.

I also like the scene that precedes it, where Clark gets ready for the game alone in the locker room. I've heard it described as cheesy, but except for the gratuitous product placement in the shot of his locker, I love it. It's one of those moments in Smallville where the music, the cinematography, and the acting all come together to make something wonderful.

Thanks for having me in the comm! :) It's such a joy to share my appreciation for Tom with people who feel the same way!

Awesome moments indeed! You chose some of the best moments ever!!!

Oh how I love that pic of Tom in Transference. Sexy doesn't even begin to describe it! *Getting tingly* He did an amazing job on that performance. Even his looks are not Clark like. It's as if he had a twin brother do the part.
I loved that scene from Jinx as well! Clark growing up.

I liked seeing Clark mentor Kara too and I wished they had done more of that. I did love that scene when Clark was helping her with her hearing.

Oh cried when Martha told Clark his first word was Lara. What a touching moment!

Thanks for the great memories!

Thanks! I'm so glad you liked my choices!

I love that Transference cap. I looked through caps from five different sources to find that one, and oh, man, you are so right. Beyond sexy!

I loved Clark and Kara together, and I was so happy to see her return in Bloodline. I understand why she's not a regular anymore, but I still miss her. And LV seems like a lovely person, with a great sense of humor.

Clark and Martha together always touches my heart. I wish AOT could come back. And bring her husband with her, so we could have Perry White at the DP!

It makes me want to pull out my dvds and watch from the beginning all over again.

I always re-watch the scenes I consider including, and invariably I end up watching the whole episode. :) I love this show so much.

I'm glad you enjoyed the pics!

Aw these were heart warming and heart tugging (and that last one was a little gruesome). Thanks for putting this together.

The blood in that last cap was a bit much, wasn't it? *shivers* But I had to include it, it was such an amazing moment. :)

I'm glad you enjoyed it! These are a lot of fun to do.

Those are all great. I especially love the 'Rosetta' one right at the top, and I was just gushing about the ep today anyway in Jeannev' lj.

I love how you've described that moment from 'Rogue.' While Jonathon' manner or means of protecting his son may sometimes have been questionable, I appreciated his fierce, instinctive desire to so, nevertheless anyway. 'Rosetta' again has that amazingly emotional Jonathon/Clark moment.

'Memoria' and 'Solitude' both contain some lovely Clark/Martha moments, and I love that shot from 'Solitude.' It's beautiful.

The Clark/Kara scenes from 'Bloodline' really work for me too.

As for other family moments, I think the Clark/Martha embrace at the end of 'Vengeance' is very moving. As is their post-Jonathon-death talk in 'Reckoning.' From 'Reckoning' another scene that always stands out for me is the one where Clark discovers Lana' dead body, in the first timeline. Not only does that scene contain one of TW' finest performances, IMO, but in terms of the family theme, I always happen to notice Jonathon' protectiveness again, how he's there for his son, shielding him away, almost physically trying to support him. Great job by JS there.

I was just gushing about the ep today anyway in Jeannev' lj.

I read her entry right after I posted this, and there she was, talking about the exact same scene! It made the perfect header for this T3, didn't it?

I love the difference in how Clark relates to Martha versus Jonathan. They both are so important to the man he will become, and they each have their role to play.

I agree with all the other moments you mention. This is the second time that Lana's death in Reckoning didn't quite make the cut, and I feel bad about that, because I think Tom's acting was exceptional there. And you're absolutely right about Jonathan. I remember how impressed I was by his fierce protectiveness when I first saw the episode, and how Clark just crumpled in his arms. *sniffles*

I know that final scene in Vengeance resonates with a lot of people, and I considered including it here, but I already used it in a different T3, and so far I haven't duplicated any moments. Similarly, there are other scenes I didn't use because I'm saving them for a different theme I have in mind for later.

I've always been partial to that Tom/Annette hug near the end of Reckoning, when they're comforting each other over their loss. Hell, I even have an icon of it.

That's an amazing moment. It's just stunning in its emotion.

Great moments all. I wish S7 had had more of Clark trying to teach Kara instead of her running away / losing her memory / going to Krypton. They missed a great chance to show us Clark as big brother by having Kara get control of her abilities so quickly.

I'd include Hidden for the scene of Clana getting caught by the Kents: the family dynamics scene were so good. And there's his all time goofiest expression...

The Jitters family reunion with Lex looking longingly on also sticks in my head.
tariel22 From: tariel22 Date: December 12th, 2008 01:54 am (UTC) (Link)
I would have enjoyed seeing more of Clark teaching Kara, too. I enjoyed the two of them together.

I'll tell you a secret: I'm saving that scene from Hidden for another T3. I'm calling that one Funny. :D

I did consider the family reunion from Jitters, and the one at the end of Insurgence as well. Those are both such happy Kent family moments, and they both break my heart for Lex.

What a wonderful picspam.

What I liked particularly is how you captured not only the love in the Martha/Clark relationship, but also the complexity of it. In the Memoria scene, Martha is tentative around Clark. You get the feeling that this is a moment she'd generally leave to Jonathan, but Jonathan isn't there. So, to see how that scene develops is lovely. Then there's Unsafe, where Martha takes a hard line with Clark, and an unfair one in my eyes. Then the moment in Solitude, where Clark's words seem to leave Martha a bit speechless (and AOT is just great there). Then Subterranean seems to show how far they've come, to almost equal footing.

A family moment I would add is Reckoning, both the scene where Clark tells them he told Lana and proposed, and also the scene where Clark and Martha are getting ready for the funeral.

I love these!!!!
tariel22 From: tariel22 Date: December 12th, 2008 02:50 am (UTC) (Link)
The dynamic between Clark and Martha has always been fascinating to me, no matter what version of Supes I'm looking at. I think Tom and AOT were wonderful together, and I've been a big fan of Martha on Smallville, although I was really mad at her in Unsafe, and thought she had lost her mind in Crimson and Promise (it was encouraging to hear AOT express the same sentiment in the S6 Companion).

Both of the scenes you mention would make great additions to this collection. I wanted to include a happy moment from Reckoning, but found I couldn't call any of them my favorites, because I have such a strong aversion to anyone getting married so young! I don't know why that particular concept makes reality rear its ugly head for me, but every time I watch Clark or Lana talk about getting married I scream NOOOOO inside. LOL!

It makes me sad that Clark has no family left on the show now. Unless, of course, you count Jor-El, which I don't.

Awww, these are lovely, thank you. I love the hug in "Solitude." One that I would have included would be Martha consoling Clark in "Vengeance." I've watched that scene probably fifty times, and never grow tired of it.

PS- Check your mailbox for The End:-).

I love that Solitude cap. It's the one case where I didn't opt for a close up of Tom.

Martha and Clark at the end of Vengeance is an amazing scene, and one that stands out for a lot of people. I used it in a previous T3, but it would have been perfect for this one as well.

Sorry it took me so long to reply to this; I was busy reading porny slash fanfic. Over and over and over. :)

An update to your Top 10 Tom picspams! I was so excited to see that.

Aww, I miss the Kent Family moments. Clark just seemed so much happier then.

Tom breaks our hearts with Clark's sorrow and loneliness.

I get a little teary seeing Clark cry. Like in that one scene in 'Vengeance', I believe? When he comes in and Martha is watching the video and they hug? Breaks my heart every time.
tariel22 From: tariel22 Date: December 12th, 2008 03:04 am (UTC) (Link)
I'm glad you like my Tom Top Tens! That means the world to me!

Smallville was definitely a whole different show when both of the Kents were still in Clark's life. I love where the show is now, but I miss those happy Kent family moments, too.

That scene from Vengeance is heartbreaking. I'm always stunned by how actors can turn themselves inside out like that, and put all that vulnerability on display, just for the sake of our entertainment. No wonder Tom craves his privacy when he's not onscreen; he gives us so much already!
