Supernatural 4.06 - Yellow Fever

This episode was about fear. Fear haunts us all in life. Fear of failure. Fear of rejection. Fear of being alone. And sometimes it’s all we can do to keep it in check. Courage isn’t the absence of fear, it’s having the strength to move forward in the face of it. The ghost sickness that attacked Dean in Yellow Fever infected him with overwhelming fear, taking away his courage, his reason, and his self-control. With the floodgates open, Dean was lost, and only his brother could bring him back from the edge.

Kripke is the master of the gotcha! moment, and he proved it again with this episode. First we were hit with the devastating pretty of the boys in suits. I will never get enough of that, and I love how we’ve seen it more and more these past two seasons. Then, as the sickness began to creep up on Dean, we started to snicker. As his fear grew, so did the hilarity, until we couldn’t stop laughing. And that’s when he did it. Suddenly Dean hallucinated that Sam was a demon, and, in an instant, things weren’t funny anymore (Jared does evil so well). Then, as Dean waited while Sam went to meet Bobby, his situation became more and more desperate, until he clutched his Gideon’s Bible for comfort. And that’s when Lilith showed up. Oh, no. From what dark depths did Dean’s imagination drag her? And what is this secret she hinted at? Sam and Bobby may have vanquished the ghost and his sickness just in time, but that doesn’t mean everything’s okay. We have unanswered questions, more worries, and more secrets between our boys. Damn you, Kripke!

Jensen was amazing this week. I think it took a lot of talent to portray Dean as he succumbed to fear. We saw a gradual progression as first concern, then worry, then paranoia, and finally delusions overtook our boy, and the emotions Jensen showed us, while funny, were always real and never ridiculous. I also think it took a tremendous amount of courage to give himself over to this script, and fully commit to Dean’s wild ride. Many other actors would have been too afraid of looking silly to go as far as Jensen did, and their performance would have suffered for it. I’m more than impressed.

Jared was awesome as well. He had to walk a fine line as Sam, indulging in a natural amount of amusement and exasperation (oh, the faces he made!) over Dean’s altered state, but never losing compassion for his brother, or the determination to save him. Sam’s care and concern were evident in the nuances we saw: his furrowed brow as he watched Dean disintegrate, a reassuring hand on his brother’s back, and the urgency he displayed as Dean’s deadline drew near. Whatever conflict remains between these two, they are there for each other, without reservation, nonetheless.

When the extent of Dean’s illness became clear, Sam knew he was on his own, and he called for reinforcements. I was so happy to see Bobby join the fight! And we got to see him drive the Impala! Was that a first? Anyway, I always feel better when Bobby’s around to help. *loves him*

By the end of the episode the mood was somber once again, and we were reminded of all that hangs over our boys’ heads. Was this the last little calm before the storm? Do we need to hold close the happy, funny moments of the past two episodes because it will be a long time before we smile again? I don’t know, but I’m nervous. There’s a war coming, and I’m very much afraid that Sam and Dean are going to end up right in the middle of it. So before we move on, let’s take one more moment to enjoy what Kripke has given us. Again this week, I leave you with my top ten quotes and caps. Tell me yours in the comments!

Dean: Hang on.
Sam: What?
Dean: I don’t like the looks of those teenagers down there.
Sam: *looks baffled*
Dean: Let’s walk this way.

Sam: Dude, you’re goin’ twenty.
Dean: And?
Sam: That’s the speed limit.
Dean: Oh, what? Safety’s a crime now?

Sam: Dude, where you goin’? That was our hotel!
Dean: Sam, I’m not gonna make a left-hand turn into oncoming traffic! I’m not suicidal!
Sam: *looks dumbfounded*
Dean: Did I just say that? That’s kinda weird. Heh.

Sam: I just talked to Bobby.
Dean: And?
Sam: Um, well, you’re not gonna like it.
Dean: What?
Sam: It’s ghost sickness.
Dean: Ghost sickness.
Sam: Yeah.
Dean: God, no.
Sam: Yeah.
Dean: I don’t even know what that is.

Dean: Were they Gamecocks?
Sam: Cornjerkers.

Sam: *offers Dean his gun*
Dean: Aw, I’m not carrying that.
Sam: *looks incredulous*
Dean: It could go off!
Sam: *best bitchface evah*
Dean: I’ll man the flashlight!
Sam: You do that.

Sam: [silently] On three. [whispers] One, two, three. *opens locker*
Kitty: Meow.
Dean: AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!! AAAAAAAAHHHH!!! WAAAAAAHH!! Whoo! Whoo! That was scary!
Sam: *walks away*

Dean: You know what? You’re awesome.
Deputy: *laughs self-consciously* Thanks. Um, you, too, I guess.

Dean: You know what? Screw this.
Sam: Whoa, whoa, whoa. Dean, come on.
Dean: No, I mean, come on, Sam. What are we doin’?
Sam: We’re hunting a ghost.
Dean: A ghost! Exactly! Who does that?
Sam: Us.
Dean: Us! Right! And that, Sam, that is exactly why our lives suck. I mean, come on, we hunt monsters! What the hell?! I mean, normal people, they see a monster and they run, but not us, no, no, no, we, we search out things that want to kill us. Eh? Huh? Or eat us! You know who does that? Crazy people! We are insane!

Sam: You can read Japanese?
Bobby: *speaks Japanese*
Sam: I guess so. Show-off!

Oh, oh, wait, don't go yet, there's more!! I know you'll agree with me when I say there are no words to describe the awesomeness of the special treat at the end of this episode. Jensen lip syncing to Eye of the Tiger, by Survivor, was an event of epic proportions in the Supernatural fandom, and has reached outside our circle to entice even more fangirls to Jensen's side. The video wouldn't be nearly as good without the continuous soundtrack of Jared's delighted laughter to accompany it. At one point, as Jensen climbs onto the roof of the Impala, I swear you can hear him say, "I love it." And while Jensen has given us one of his best performances to date, I'm afraid he didn't do it for us, ladies. You will never convince me that he didn't do this entirely for Jared's entertainment and approval. :) And I absolutely love him for it. *smishes the boys*

Could you love these guys, or this show, any more? I know I couldn't.
