Tom Top Ten: Dangerous - I worship at the television altar — LiveJournal
Tom Top Ten: Dangerous

In anticipation of Smallville returning to our television screens with S8 on September 18, I'm kicking off a new series of mini (just 10 pics each) picspams in celebration of Tom Welling, highlighting the wonderful performances he gives us, episode after episode. I'm calling it my Tom Top Ten. Each picspam will have a theme of just one word, much like the Smallville episode titles. I call the first one Dangerous. Enjoy!

1) 2.04 - Heat. Under the heady influence of Red!K, Clark is unpredictable, self-indulgent, rude, and violent. It's a Clark we've never seen before, and Tom makes him as sexy as he is scary!

2) 3.01 - Exile. Racked by guilt, Clark has run away to the big city, where he lives a life of fast cars, fast women, and violent crime, forgetting his loneliness and remorse in a haze of Red!K. Tom plays every layer and nuance of this Clark perfectly, and makes us fear for the hero we have lost.

3) 3.02 - Phoenix. When Clark's other life follows him home to Smallville and threatens his family, he doesn't hesitate to let Morgan Edge know there are lines he will allow no man to cross. Tom makes us realize that Clark's summer in Metropolis has left an indelible mark on our sweet boy.

4) 4.01 - Crusade. After disappearing for three months, Clark returns to Smallville as Kal-El, Son of Krypton. Fierce and emotionless, he will pursue his destiny at all costs, with no mind to the puny humans who may perish in his wake. Tom makes us despair for Martha's loving son, even as we squee when Kal-El takes to the skies!

5) 4.06 - Transference. Lionel and Clark switch bodies! Tom is the embodiment of the Magnificent Bastard in Clark's body, and stuns viewers with his finely crafted performance, giving us one of the best episodes of Smallville we've ever seen!

6) 5.07 - Splinter. Infected by Silver!K, Clark suffers from paranoid delusions with violent tendencies! Tom makes us believe Clark might actually kill Lana Lang!

7) 5.13 - Vengeance. Reeling from the death of his father, and tortured by guilt that he is responsible, Clark hunts down the criminal who dared to assault his mother. Tom takes Clark right to the edge of the precipice, and leaves us all breathless!

8) 5.16 - Hypnotic. The most powerful being on Earth is under the spell of a conscienceless woman with murder on her mind! Tom makes us realize the terrible threat our hero could have become without the moral code and compassion instilled in him by the Kents.

9) 6.17 - Combat. Angry and hurt after Lana's decision to marry Lex, Clark seems to be spoiling for a fight, and walks a very fine line as he pursues those he inadvertently released from the Phantom Zone. Tom shows us that Clark is ready to defend the planet he calls home, even from the most intimidating of adversaries.

10) 7.01 - Bizarro. The worst of the Phantoms has stolen Clark's DNA and made himself into a twisted, evil version of our hero. In an acting tour de force, Tom plays both roles brilliantly, with no question of where one ends and the other begins.

Screen caps courtesy of acampbell and SVFan, with my thanks!

And there you have my choices for Tom's Top Ten performances where he gave us a bit of a scare! Do you have a different Dangerous favorite? If so, tell us about it in the comments. And look for another Tom Top Ten picspam soon!

I think you've already compiled my own Dangerous favorite list there! :) Splinter is still the one that scares me the most by the way, TW played the crazy paranoid so well. On the other hand, all the unnecessary violence and shock factors still makes me cringe every time I see those K episodes.

I'm glad I chose the moments that speak to you as well!

The scariest for me was Bizarro, because of the way he so casually killed people, but Splinter was the most disturbing, because Clark was so completely different. Plus I always get upset when he treats his mom badly, even though I know he's not himself.

We can always count on you to give us plenty of brain-fodder and eye-candy to get us through hiatuses! You rule! :D

I love your Dangerous compilation, and I agree with it 100%! Exile and Phoenix remain my favourites to date, because Tom shows us just how crazy and dangerous Clark Kent could get under the wrong circumstances. The way he manhandles Chloe while telling her to get out of his apartment? Still gives me the shivers.

Splinter is another beautiful example. The way he slowly goes from one delusion to another, all the while getting more and more paranoid - Tom plays it to perfection. And I love how Jonathan's death causes him to temporarily lose control of himself in Vengeance, how he cannot distinguish from right and wrong because of the haze of fury hanging in front of his eyes, and how ultimately, it's a vision of Jonathan that brings him back to his senses.

Great list, and looking forward to more! :)

Thanks! I'm glad you liked it!

I almost used that cap of Clark with Chloe, but as always, I went with the maximum pretty instead. :) He really does look scary in that pic!

Splinter is just stunning for me to watch. Tom doesn't receive enough recognition for his acting, IMO, and he just keeps getting better. And Vengeance was heartbreaking, especially when Martha couldn't reach him. I loved the idea of Jonathan's memory guiding him just as he did when he was alive. *sniffles*

Ooh, I think I'm going to like this theme picspam! This one was wonderful! I loved Exile Kal ... I have a hair fetish and his was amazing there.

He's always gorgeous, isn't he? Intense or happy ... just ... beautiful. ;)

One scene where he scared me was in s4, "Pariah", where he's overcome with grief over Alicia's death and almost killed that guy. My heart broke for him too ... poor Clark. Great Clark-Lois moment though.

Great pics though! Thanks for this. :D

Tom's hair has never looked better than it did in Exile! He is so gorgeous in that episode!

That was scary in Pariah, but I have to admit I was cheering him on. I hated that guy. And I really liked Alicia. Poor Clark.

I'm glad you enjoyed it! I had a lot of fun putting it together, and I have folders started for at least four more themes so far. I'll be back! :)

Can I just say that this is the best idea on my flist all day!!
I love all your choices, the only extra two I would have included (perhaps as bonus Dangerous!Clark)would have been in S4's Pariah where basically the only thing that stops him from killing Tim (who killed Alicia) is Lois arriving just in time. The second extra would have been in S3's Rogue when Phelan finally pushes him too far framing his Dad for murder. He's this close (thumb and forefinger nearly touching) to killing Phelan. I know it's not canon and I know it would irrevocably change the face of Superman for all time but both times I seriously wouldn't have had ANY objections to Clark being flawed enough momentarily to finish the job! Go Dangerous!Clark...so long as he's on my side that it! LOL!
tariel22 From: tariel22 Date: September 8th, 2008 08:53 am (UTC) (Link)
Yay! I'm glad you liked it!

I like the moments you mention. They're both instances where Clark is dangerous not because he's under the influence of something, but rather because he has let his anger get the better of him. I thought about including Precipice for the same reason, because in that episode Clark has to deal with the consequences of losing control. I think those situations are perfect for Smallville, because that's an important lesson for Clark to learn before he becomes Superman.

Great picspam, thank you. I love that scene where he grabs Morgan Edge and snarls at him. He's so cranky when his family is threatened!

A similar scene I love is after Lex hires the meteor freaks in "Mortal" (see avi), and Clark stalks into his study and fights with him.
tariel22 From: tariel22 Date: September 8th, 2008 09:01 am (UTC) (Link)
Thanks, Elly! I love that scene with Morgan Edge, too. I never expected to see Clark act like that on his own, and it gave me a little thrill to see him take charge that way! It made me see Clark differently to know he had fully discovered that darker side of himself, and could access it whenever he wanted to.

Mortal was on my original list, and I agonized over not including it. That is an incredible scene, and truly unique, because it could only happen when Clark is powerless.

What a great picspam! Dangerous Clark=Incredibly Sexy Tom! I can't wait for the next one! :-)

Thanks! You know, obviously I will do a theme that includes Clark's sexiest moments, and I suspect we'll see a number of these episodes again in that picspam! :)

I love this picspam! Transference is just a brilliant performance by Tom.
tariel22 From: tariel22 Date: September 8th, 2008 09:09 am (UTC) (Link)
I'm so happy you liked it! Transference still amazes me every time I watch it. And I love the scene between Clark-as-Lionel and Lex the best! The way Clark sweeps into the study, throwing open those double doors, is so sexy and powerful. And that moment of recognition, where Lex says, "Dad?" gives me chills every time. I love it.

Woah. What a great picspam! Among my favorites, the one from Transference and the one from Crusade, where he looks so different from his usual self!
tariel22 From: tariel22 Date: September 8th, 2008 09:22 am (UTC) (Link)
Thanks! I still remember that scene from Transference, how at first all we saw were Clark's eyes, and they looked so murderously intent. *shivers*

I love that scene on the plane in Crusade. Kal-El is absolutely relentless in his pursuit of the stone, and he couldn't care less about the safety of the people on the plane. It always makes me wonder, is that who Clark would have been if he had been raised on Krypton?

Wonderful cap choices for a wonderful theme!
Tom really shines when given the opportunity to stretch beyond his normal Clark Kent boundaries. That's not to discount his Clark Kent either, as John Glover explained when commenting about "being" Clark Kent in Transference, being the "good" guy and really sellin g it is a lot tougher thing to do on a regular basis.

I look forward to your other picspams in this series!

*blushes* Thank you so much!

I know we all swoon over Tom's beauty on a daily basis, but what I love is that we appreciate him as an actor as well. He works so hard and gives so much to this show, and I wanted to celebrate that.

I hope to post the next one on Tuesday, the day the S7 DVDs come out. I'm having a lot of fun with this series!

Great picspam. Thank you for compiling and sharing.

I look at these pics and I think it's in his eyes. They're so full of confidence and, you know, danger. (Except for Splinter. That's a different kind of danger. The confidence is gone. But the danger's still in his eyes. It's an out of control, panic, which I think makes it the scariest of all.)

Thanks again and I'm looking forward to the other Tom Top Ten themes.
tariel22 From: tariel22 Date: September 8th, 2008 09:46 am (UTC) (Link)
Thanks! I'm glad you liked it!

I agree with you that Tom's eyes are the key. Whatever emotion he's portraying, you can see it right there in his eyes, and they often speak volumes beyond the dialogue in the script. To me it shows how completely committed Tom is to his performance. He never lets me down.

This is such a wonderful idea. And I definitely think you've hit the best of the best. I would also include Crimson where Tom gets to play RedK Clark on a couple of different levels, and all with varying degress of "dangerous". I especially like how he goads Lex into a fight in the barn scene. Personally, I've always believed that kidnapping Lana and dragging her to the barn was really just a way to lure Lex. Because really, if he had wanted to kidnap her, why go to the first place Lex would look?

I also think another great "dangerous" Clark scene is from Oracle, when Clark is waiting in the barn for Lionel, convinced that Lionel had something to do with his fathers death. He's very chilling, sitting there in the shadows.

And I love his strut into Lex's office in Mortal, mad as hell, and ready to throw down. One non-powered guy to the other. I love the way Tom says the line "You want to see what I'm made of it?" ::love::
tariel22 From: tariel22 Date: September 8th, 2008 10:00 am (UTC) (Link)
Oh, I'm so glad you liked it! I love all the scenes you mention, and you describe them so well. Originally I think I had a list of 18 possible episodes, and winnowing that list down to ten wasn't easy!

I have so much love for that scene in Mortal.

What was interesting to me was that there weren't any wildly out of control moments that I could remember in S7. I really think Tom gave Clark a new air of quiet strength this past season, and in that way brought Clark that much closer to the man he will one day be as Superman.
chrisluvstommy From: chrisluvstommy Date: September 7th, 2008 10:08 pm (UTC) (Link)
It's so very intresting to see such a handsome man play dangerous and violent it's a huge turn on but a little scary as well.. you wonder how far he'd go to get what he wants because deep inside it would be what you wanted to...that 1st pic is just sexy as hell great picspam
tariel22 From: tariel22 Date: September 8th, 2008 10:04 am (UTC) (Link)
Thanks! I agree that dangerous Clark is often dead sexy. Those bad boys get us every time, don't they? :)
