I worship at the television altar
What a guy!
Just when I think I couldn't love the guy more, something like this turns up. This was first posted by tasabian, and snagged by me to spread the Tommy love. Is he unbelievable, or what?

Crazy Days and Nights is a blog written by an entertainment lawyer. The blogger includes blind items about celebrities, and sometimes goes back and reveals who they are about. This one is about Tom:

I feel like most of the kindness items lately have revolved around women. That is all well and good, but it is nice to hear that guys can be kind as well. This one involves an actor who would be A list by the definition that he is the star of a long running dramatic television series. Films? He's done a couple, but is really known for his television role. Age? Not old, not aging, but not in his twenties anymore either.

Our actor is married, and she should be included as well in this kindness since she is part of it. Every two weeks or so, no matter where he is, our actor stops into a local toy store. Generally a big chain, but no love from me since they make him pay retail. Our actor spends $1000 every two weeks like clockwork. When he was filming and kept going to the same store every two weeks, someone asked him why he was buying so many toys every few weeks.

Turns out our actor, stockpiles about 75% of the toys he buys all year long and at Christmas time donates them all to organizations like Toys For Tots, etc. The other 25% he sends to various children's hospitals throughout the year.

You know the best part? The guy doesn't need publicity to keep doing it.

Tom Welling

I have this wonderful image in my head of Tom having a blast going toy shopping. :) No wonder he's so great with child actors; he obviously adores kids! And I had to include a few choice pics of Tom with kids, of course!

1.16 - Stray

2.08 - Ryan

2.21 - Accelerate

4.20 - Ageless

Totally off topic, but can you believe that arm? Guh.

4.22 - Commencement

5.09 - Lexmas: I don't think he's acting much here. :)

5.18 - Fragile: Cutest scene ever.

6.09 - Subterranean

7.01 - Bizarro: Is that my Superman, or what?

7.12 - Fracture: God, he's beautiful. *thud*

7.18 - Apocalypse

Cheaper By the Dozen

Tom, you're definitely my hero.

What an incredibly kind guy, it moves me so much to read that.

Me, too. What a wonderful thing to do, and of course he's not looking for one iota of recognition for it. I just love him to pieces!

Hi! *waves* I think he really does love kids, and it shows in his scenes with them. And dogs, too! :)

I'm glad you liked the pics! Thanks for commenting.

That's truly wonderful. Like I couldn't love him any more and then he does things like this.

Doesn't it seem like every time we hear a new tidbit about him, it's something that makes us love him more? He is beyond awesome, IMO. *smishes Tom*

I'm pretty much convinced he's perfect. LOL!

Doesn't he just look so genuinely tender and affectionate with the kids? I know he's a great actor, but I think we're seeing something more in these pics. And it's obvious they love him back, too!

And yeah, that pic from Ageless kills me, too. *dies with you*

Isn't that an awesome bit of news about our Tom? I'm just so freaking impressed with him as a person.

And you included a picspam!! Yay!! A couple of kid tidbits, the mother of the infant in Ageless (which was a little girl) said the baby adored Tom. And the director on CBTD says in the DVD commentary that he would've been at wits end if it wasn't for the help of Tom and Piper Perabo in keeping the little ones corraled and entertained. Piper also said the little twins in that movie were always using Tom as a jungle gym. And according to our set insider at DTTW, the baby in Apocalypse cried endlessly until Tom get the idea to tie a baby toy underneath the camera when shooting.

And can I just say, once again, that Claddie is Love! Fragile melts my heart everytime I watch it.

Oh, I love hearing all those kid tidbits!! Thank you!! It really does seem as if children are naturally drawn to him. He is such an amazing guy! And reading this made me even more excited about S8, and the pleasure of seeing him on my TV screen, week after week, for one more season.

I totally agree about Claddie. Their scenes together were all so touching, and I'm convinced Tom's direction had a lot to do with that (as did their natural chemistry, I'm sure). How I wish we could have had a peek behind the scenes for that episode, or even better, a commentary with Tom and the actress who played Maddie!

<33333. Oh, Tom.

Why aren't there more guys like him?!?!

Eee, thank you for the tidbits! Tom is indeed a hero among both kids and adults! :D

I just wanted to thank you for the pictures. Having all of them in one place really underlines what we already knew--how much Tom truly enjoys the company of children. He relates so well to them and seems genuinely happy when filming scenes with them, doesn't he? Some of my favorite SV moments are when Clark is interacting with kids. You're right; sometimes it seems that he's not so much acting as just having fun and being himself. This is when I love Tom most. *sigh*

Thanks so much for your comment! I'm glad you enjoyed the pics. I had fun tracking them down, it let me revisit a lot of really wonderful Smallville moments.

I'd love to see Tom make a movie where he plays a father, or a father figure, to a cute kid. His character's interaction with the younger kids in the CBTD movies was charming.

I don't know much about him but he sounds like a great guy.
And by the looks of the 'Cutest scene ever' he's a talented artist too. ;)
tariel22 From: tariel22 Date: July 6th, 2008 05:05 pm (UTC) (Link)
That was the funniest scene. In it the little girl is a talented artist, and he's trying to bond with her and make her feel comfortable. Here is Clark's dialogue:

Hey, Maddie, what are you drawing? You're quite the artist, aren't you? You know, I'm an artist, too. You don't believe me? [ Sighs ] All right, well, I'll just have to prove it to you, then. Now, prepare yourself, because this is gonna be a self-portrait, and you might not be able to tell the difference between this and an actual photograph.

And then he shows her that stick figure, and flashes that cute little smile! *melts* Tom directed that episode, too. Can you tell I kind of like the guy? LOL!

Gah, I am now a puddle. That is so sweet of him and Jamie I just want to smish them both.

You see, THIS is why this guy (though sadly not his character) is Superman. AlMiles may not be my favorite pair, but they knew enough to select a man with true character to play THE American hero.
Hats off to the Wellings for their humble generosity. (Heh, I just watched "The Turkletons" on Scrubs and almost called them "The Wellingtons" except that makes them sound like they were baked in pastry.)
tariel22 From: tariel22 Date: July 6th, 2008 05:21 pm (UTC) (Link)
They are obviously good people, which is so unbelievably rare in the entertainment industry, it seems. I think it takes tremendous strength of character to remain uncorrupted by fame and fortune, but Tom certainly seems to have done it.

I still credit David Nutter the most for Tom's casting, but AlMiles did have good instincts all the way around when it came to casting this show. Or else they were incredibly lucky! TW, MR, and AM are all amazing, as are JG, AOT, and JS.

LOL! You are so funny! Beef Wellington is the one authentic dish I had in England that I enjoyed. I found most of the food inedible, and the hubby and I spent our last few days in London eating at the Hard Rock every night. :)

Aw, that is PRECIOUS! And to supplement that kind of news with those pictures - I have two heroes now! :D Thank you for these! *hugs*

Wow. What can I say that hasn't been said? Tom is a rare breed in Hollywood. I adore him even more if possible!

I have another Tom with child pic to add to your adorable picspam but is it possible to post a pic in a comment? Sorry! I'm new in lj!
tariel22 From: tariel22 Date: July 7th, 2008 02:48 am (UTC) (Link)
I'd love to see your pic! To post a pic in a comment, type the following without the asterisk:

So when you remove the asterisk, this:

<*img src="http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff190/tariel22/picspams/tom_with_kids/sv518_011.jpg" />

Becomes this:

If your pic is in an LJ gallery rather than on an image hosting site, it's a little more complicated. The only way I know to do it is to click on "post" (to create a blank form you won't actually post), click on "insert image" to choose your pic, and then cut and paste the resultant code into your comment form.

Oh, great pic! Thanks so much for posting it. Tom looks so sweet and compassionate there, and gorgeous! :) And I love Mark, aka FedEx! I could totally relate to him. There are nine kids in my family, four brunettes, four redheads, and one blonde: me. My brother used to tell me I was the mailman's kid because I was so different. :D
