When viewing an AU episode of any show, I always say, consider the source. This AU was entirely of Jor-El's making, for the specific purpose of motivating Clark to accept his destiny and fight for his future. Once you realize that, it all makes perfect sense. Jor-El thinks that Clark's greatest weakness is how much he cares for the humans in his life, and how he lets his emotions rule his decisions.

I very much like your interpretation of this AU's purpose because it *really* bothered me that everyone seemed to be so happy and well off without Clark, which we know could never be considering these past seven years of Clark saving everyone on the show. I thought it was really unfair to Clark to present such a perfect picture because Clark not only will ultimately protect the world, he has protected everyone in his life for as long as we have known him and that should be acknowledged to him, somehow.

Your interpretation makes me feel better as to the choices that were made by the writers for this particular AU. I want to believe they had that purpose in mind when they made them!

Wonderful review, as usual. And I couldn't agree more about Tom!

When I first watched the episode, I was really confused. I couldn't understand why they would show everyone as being better off without Clark. So the past seven years have had no positive impact on the people who Clark loves best? That's crazy. Let's see, Lex would have died in the Pilot, Lana in the second episode, and Chloe in the third. And those are just the first times he saved their lives! But when it was revealed that this was Jor-El's little exercise, it started to make more sense. Maybe it's just a huge fanwank on my part, but that's my story and I'm sticking to it! :)

I'm so happy for Tom that the episode turned out so great. He just keeps impressing me more with his many talents!
