Thank you for this unexpected treat! :D

When I first watched this episode, I was totally pissed off that Clark was pissed off simply because of Lana's marriage, but I grew to really appreciate Combat after repeated viewings, and I thought that scene at the end with his mom is just simply amazing. *suddenly misses Martha, A LOT*

There's an extraordinary moment where, drunk with anticipation, Maddox jokes about Clark's pretty face, and Clark gives an almost imperceptible shake of his head, as if to say, don't even think about messing with me, bitch. It's wonderful! They seal the deal with a handshake, and the scene is over.

Maddox is awesome. I love how he's just so unabashed in calling Clark a pretty boy, and he mentioned it twice too lol. Those in charge of Belle Reve are just as crazy as the inmates! And how ironic it is that Maddox has a dual identity.

Hey, thanks so much for commenting! That's so cool what you say about Maddox having a dual identity. I never even thought of that! I so enjoyed how the actor played Maddox the promoter with such abandon and glee, and then turned around and played Maddox the nebbish perfectly as well. He was great.

I miss Martha, too. I wish they would beg AOT to come back for some episodes next season. Clark's mom is supposed to be a part of his life, even once he becomes Superman, isn't she? And one of the things I miss the most, which has kind of taken me by surprise, is the dynamic Martha had with Lois. I always liked that relationship.

That's very true. As much as I love Clark becoming his own man right now, Jonathan and Martha, or at least one of them, should have been there. I mean come on! Even Bruce has always had Alfred as a father, the parent/child relationships are essential to these characters, I'll never understand why they want to do completely away with Martha.

I've really enjoyed Martha's relationship with Lois too, she started out pretty much like Clark himself with regard to Lois, not comfortable with Lois' brashness and whirlwind-like attitude at all but in the end becoming genuinely close with each other.

I also thought Martha saw Lois's potential (as did Jonathan). Martha didn't hire Lois to be her Chief of Staff as a favor, but because she knew she could do a good job, and I think she wanted to nurture the promise she saw in Lois. That was unique for Martha; she never showed that kind of interest in any of Clark's other friends, or at least not onscreen.
