The end of Clana? - I worship at the television altar

The end of Clana?
This is for the Smallville fans on my flist. Now that KK has made a public statement about her future involvement in Smallville, I have three questions for you all.

We now know that KK's last appearance in S7 will be this week's episode, Veritas, and it looks like she will only be in the first part of S8 (although I wouldn't be surprised if they try to get her to come back for the series finale). I find myself contemplating the possibility that we might actually see the end of Clana before the end of the series! So, here are my questions:

1) If it were all up to you, how would you write Lana's exit from Smallville?

2) What is your greatest fear about how TPTB will handle KK's departure from the show?

3) Realistically, what do you think we'll see on our television screens to explain Lana's absence from the show in S8?

If I may...

1) It would involve a giant foot coming down from the sky and smushing her into the ground, never to be revived or unearthered again.

2) That every episode after her departure will begin with the words "In loving memory of Kristen Kreuk", and they will be superimposed over both TW and MR's credit intros.

3)Four words: Nuclear fission research. Jakarta.

LOL! Oh, come on, tell me how you really feel! You know, I think a lot people feel exactly the same way, and it just goes to show you what a disservice TPTB have done to the character of Lana Lang. KK's smart to get out while she can. I can't imagine it's any fun to play a character who so many love to hate.

1) I think that organically she and Clark should just come to the mutual conclusion that they aren't right for each other. Clark's instincts have told him as much from S3-on. I believe Lana, based on various things she's said, only harbors a surface love for Clark, at the core of which is contempt. I think they were initially attracted to each other for superficial reasons and there's been nothing of substance to sustain a long-term relationship. Plus her neediness and his guilt...not a recipe for a healthy relationship.

2) What bothers me is that they're going to cobble together a hasty explanation for her departure or reduced role that won't be anything like the above.

3) I suspect she could get zapped into a coma and Clark will feel guilty for the 999th time.

As I've said many times, I've never understood what exactly they're supposed to see in one another, and I understand Lana's motivations even less than Clark's. With Clark, I can maybe get the guilt over the whole "I traded my father's life for Lana's" thing, or maybe that he's trying to cling to some kind of normalcy in his life (both terrible reasons to stay in a relationship), but I totally don't get why Lana would want to be with Clark. He has lied to her countless times, he's closed off from her emotionally and they have no sex life, he shares all kinds of things with Chloe that he doesn't with her, and the way he rushes off to save people all the time can't possibly help with her abandonment issues. How can they not see that they don't belong together?

And yeah, I have no confidence in the show's ability to handle this well.

I would like for both she and Clark to realize that any type of relationship other then friendship between them is doomed! Also, I would like him to give her a very deep kiss good bye and wipe her memory clean of ever knowing his secret ( A girl can pray! ).

Oh, I love the idea of a memory wipe! :) Even though the comic book Lana knows Clark's secret, the Smallville Lana scares me.

Rosenchest icon FTW! \o/

1) Lex should kill her. He's 'evil' now already and it'll be awesome payback for the craptastic Lexana we had inflicted on us

2) Her death will be what prompts Clark to become Superman. No!!!!

3) Urgh! She'll probably just go to Metropolis to visit Aunt Nell and never come back. LOL! Seriously, maybe she'll decide to make Isis her full time job or something

I think I might love to see Lex kill Lana! Although we both know the show will never go there. :P And seriously, if Lana is the reason Clark fully embraces his destiny, my head will explode.

1) If it were all up to you, how would you write Lana's exit from Smallville?

I would do it without excessive drama or angst. Clark and Lana have struggled in their relationship all season. Clearly her knowing the secret has not been the cure-all for their issues. I'd like both of the characters to come to this conclusion, though honestly I think the show is better served by having Clark take the lead in this. Allow them a heart-to-heart talk, let them not discard the love they have for each other, and let them tearfully say good-bye.

2) What is your greatest fear about how TPTB will handle KK's departure from the show?

That whatever it is, it will be All. Clarks. Fault. Or that it will be Lana leaving Clark even while he begs her to stay.

3) Realistically, what do you think we'll see on our television screens to explain Lana's absence from the show in S8?

I think what we've seen in S7 will be the basis of what we'll see to explain her departure in S8. That this relationship just does not work. I do believe they'll have Lana show up in S8, having been cured of whatever strikes her down in Veritas. And depending on how many eps she's around for, we'll either have Clana ending things once and for all right away (if she's around for only 1 or 2 eps), or have them possibly attempt to stay together, only to have it not work (if she's around for 5-7 eps). I do think the end result will have Lana leaving town, probably for some place like Europe to "find herself". With any luck at all, we'll have Clark happily driving her to the airport, wishing her the best of luck, then going about his life.

1) Exactly what I'm thinking, too. Let both characters come out the other side with their dignity intact, and the ability to remain friends. I don't want Clark to condemn Lana, but I'd like him to see that she's made choices that are incompatible with his moral code, and also that she is accountable for those choices, and that he is not responsible for where she has ended up in her life. No more Clark guilt! I'd like Lana to acknowledge that she needs something Clark can't offer, namely the kind of love that places her above all else, all the time.

And then, after they are well and truly broken up, I want Clark to turn to Chloe and say, "What was I thinking?!" LOL!

2) Mine is that Clark can't be with Lana for whatever reason (she plays the martyr and sends him away, she dumps him, she dies), rather than doesn't want to be with her. That would be a slap in the face to the iconic love between Supes and Lois.

3) I'm pretty much afraid to even speculate on what the crack monkeys might do, but your scenario sounds fine to me. I just want Clana to be OVER before the end of the series, and for us to have episodes where Clark has finally put the relationship behind him.

Alas, even if KK isn't there, I fear that Clana will never really be gone from the show, but:

1) I'd have Clark leave her angrily, calling her on every shitty thing she's done on the show. I do NOT want to see Lana skate away blamelessly after all the mayhem and hypocrisy she's caused. I want her friendless and abandoned, with Clark telling HER "I don't know how I ever could have loved you." She deserves it and more.

2) That Lana will be portrayed as the selfless martyr who gives Clark to the world, and that Clark will leave her unwillingly, still loving her, so that any future relationship (with Chlois or Clois) will be second choice. Blah, blah, blah to that.

3)I think that Lana will fall into a coma, or go away to have her paralysis treated, while Clark will mourn and mope and feel guilty and STILL not get over her. And everyone will blame themselves for Lana's illness- Chloe for not being a better friend, and Clark and Lex for driving her to this state. It's a perfect way to stall the deathstick that is Clana, because I do believe they will drag it out until the bitter end, the bastards.

Of course, if we keep getting squee-worthy moments like "I love your son" from Chloe, I can at least fast forward to those on YouTube! :-)

I'm getting the impression you're not a big Lana fan. LOL! And you're making me remember all the things that have made me crazy in the past! Grrr! Come on, write the breakup fic! :)

Your prediction for what will happen sounds all too plausible. :(

-how would you write Lana's exit from Smallville?
Well, it all begins behind a different false-wall at Isis, behind which we see Lana chanting over her steaming caldron... for that hot mofo Bizarro to come back... and save her from this clod Clark.

However, Lex has by now bugged Isis Institute, and it's his surveillance monitor that Clark comes upon in the manor, realizing the bitch is still hot for his bad side. Of course, it's Lex's fault, because he gave her that addictive taste of archetypal Bad Boy.

-fear about how TPTB will handle KK's departure from the show?
That Clark will always pine for her, instead of just accept that she was a phase in his life.

-what do you think we'll see...to explain Lana's absence from the show in S8?
The best we can hope for is that Chloe helps Clark get beyond Lana. We'll have to begin seeing CLois-action, or else we'll have a Gay Superman as CW Canon.

I like your imagination! :) And what's Clark doing over at Lex's? Hmmm.

I, too, fear the pining. It would have been so much better if they had left that relationship behind in high school, where it belonged.

I MAY OR MAY NOT HAVE JUST DIED OF HAPPY.

Ok, so I absolutely FREAKED OUT MADLY when I read that KK's last appearance in season 7 would be Veritas.

That episode is seriously gearing up to be the death of my fangirlish self.
OH TRUE BLISS. THE END OF CLANA IS FINALLY NEAR!

1) If it were all up to you, how would you write Lana's exit from Smallville?
· I'm not just saying it because I dislike the character. I think they should kill her. No really. Clark is so addicted to Lana that the only way he'll truly get the hell over her is if she were dead. That's what I think anyway.

2) What is your greatest fear about how TPTB will handle KK's departure from the show?
· I think they'll make it some sort of saintly "I'M DOING THIS FOR YOU, CLARK!" rather than her leaving because Clark finally says, "ENOUGH BETCH. OFF OF MY FARM WITH YOU...& call Chloe and tell her to come over" *whistles innocently*

3) Realistically, what do you think we'll see on our television screens to explain Lana's absence from the show in S8?
· I think she may go back to Paris to continue her art education.

Re: I MAY OR MAY NOT HAVE JUST DIED OF HAPPY.

So, I'm guessing you won't mourn Lana when she's gone? *snerk* You are majorly getting my hopes up with your fangirl squeeing! :) And I'm afraid innocent is not the first adjective that comes to mind when I think of you, especially if we're talking about the possibility of some Chlark action. LOL!

Okay, your first paragraph is completely MADE OF WIN!! That perfectly describes everything that frustrates me about this show! Thank you! I'm so hopeful for what S8 will bring us, but I'm afraid, too. I know this show too well. :P

I love your scenario, and I especially love how detailed it is! Can we get that to the writers somehow? :) And I'm totally with you that we've already seen enough guilt piled on Clark to last us a lifetime. I need a clean break with Lana, with a minimum of baggage. But who knows what the crack monkeys will come up with?

1) Clark decides he's just not that into her and superspeeds her to Siberia.
2) That they'll ship her off somewhere or that something will happen that will force Clark and Lana to be apart and the pining will never really stop, even with her gone. I would prefer that they mature out of that undying love thing they have for each other and she becomes just a friend who's tired of getting concussed every other week so she moves to Metropolis to make it big as a butcher or art dealer or Maytag repairman, whatever. Just get her to steppin'.
3) Some sort of piney "I have to go but I don't want to but I have to live my own life and find myself but I'll always love you" mushy crap. She'll have to get some serious distance, possibly another country. It'll could be some charity angle centered around Isis.
tariel22 From: tariel22 Date: March 26th, 2008 05:59 am (UTC) (Link)
LOL! You always make me laugh so hard! Superspeeds her to Siberia? Make it big as a butcher? hee! I, too, dread the pining. No pining, no whining!! What will they do? I'm afraid to even speculate!
