Okay, after your review I'm going to have to go back and rewatch this episode. I was so excited for it (especially since I wasn't getting my Winchester's this week ) that I think my expectations were too high. The first alarm bell went off when I heard the words "gum factory" Wha? Followed almost immediately by the closeup shot of the gum. I had the same thought as you - Well, of course Pete = shameless product placement + corny music promotion. But, while it was nostalgic, it was groan worthy not clever. And by the time Pete "The Boss" Ross went all I'm-not-gonna-hide-my-light-under-a-bushel on Clark, I had already started doing laundry.

I would have much preferred to see a more mature Pete. When they brought Jess back in Gilmore Girls, they had evolved the character appropriately so you got the sense that he had had other life experiences and maybe learned a thing or two. Last night's Pete could have been plunked down into Season 3 without missing a beat. And that's not taking anything away from Sam Jones III. I think he did the best with what he had to work with.

And while not as bad as the Thanksgiving scene in Season 6 with Chloe and Lionel sitting next to each other at the table all giddy-like (uh, okay), the idea that Clark's consiglieres are Lionel and Lana is laughable.

I do think it's funny that everyone has dropped out of college though.

And of course, Clark looked awesome. You're right, that boy can work a T-shirt. Oh Tommy, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways.

You probably shouldn't bother to watch again. I'm beginning to think I'm the only person on the face of the Earth who liked this episode. :) But I've watched it five times (I always end up watching it over and over as I write my review), and I still stand by what I wrote.

You're absolutely right about Jess on GG, that was handled so well, but Smallville as a show isn't that deep, and Pete as a character isn't that introspective, IMO. Personally, I had hoped Pete would be in college studying law, in preparation for his future career in politics, and I wanted him to come to town, sweep Lana off her feet, and leave with her. That way they could get rid of Lana and be true to the comics at the same time. Yes, I know I was dreaming, but it was such a lovely dream! :)

I saw Clark doing a lot of listening and considering, but I didn't actually see him doing anything Lana or Lionel told him to do, or even conceding to their point of view. I'm clinging to that. I really think Clark is acting independently more and more this season, and only Chloe seems to have any true influence over his actions. And I think after what happened with Lionel in this episode, Clark is going to pull back from that relationship even more. Even if Lionel comes up with a plausible explanation for why he had the bracelet, he still lied to Clark about it.

We can always agree that Tom is gorgeous, no matter the episode! :)

Thanks for reading, and for commenting! It always means a lot to me!

I actually did watch it again last night and I definitely saw the subtleties that you mentioned so I appreciate you pointing them out. I think my first viewing was just overshadowed by the blatant marketing placements. And hell, I am a marketer so I get it. I often feel that the powers that be have creatively abandoned the show. Maybe its because some of the key players are now focused on Heroes, but it sometimes seems so different from the show I feel in love with. I guess that was why I was so hopeful that with Pete coming back maybe we'd get a little of that old flavor back.

HA! I love the Pete leaving with Lana scenario. That would have been too good to be true! But, they could have done Pete in law school and coming back to start to sweep Lana off her feet. Pete had some chutzpah and if they would have coupled that with burgeoning power and influence that would have been clever. A little flirtation with Lana, a little bit more on Lex's level. But I guess that would have made him look more mature and progressed then some of the main characters so that wouldn't have worked, huh?

Oh well, I still love the show, even when I get disappointed when in IMHO the powers that be short change it.

And, I could watch Tom Welling clipping his toenails and be mesmerized! That man is just *guh*.

OMG, I love this idea! What a great episode that would have made, with anvils I could cheer for! :) I like the way you think! Besides, Pete and Lana make such a cute couple. Just look at them (cap courtesy of SVFan.com):

I do feel that losing Greg Beeman was a terrible blow to the show, but of course I don't blame him for leaving. He deserved to have his own show to run, and the success of Heroes proves what a wonderful talent he has. He also gave fabulous commentary, but since they don't do those anymore anyway, I guess we would have lost those even if he had stayed. :(

BTW, just to clarify, the icon was Lana laughing at the show, not your review. I love your reviews! :)

LOL! I didn't take it personally. But now I have to ask, is Clark staring at my cleavage, or the Chloevage? :)
