Meet the new Superman
Entertainment Weekly looks at the next generation of big-screen superheroes in their February 25, 2011 issue, with a special focus on Superman. Here are my scans of the article introducing Henry Cavill. Click for BIGGER.

The cover and the pretty:

I'll certainly give the movie a chance, because it's Superman, but I'll probably always wish it had been Tom. This is MY Superman:

Thank you for the scans!

Although I would've liked to see Tom as Supes, I think that it's time for him to move on and be able to do other things. Being Superman in film would probably mean he'd have to commit another 10 years to the part.

The man can act, I really want to see him stretch his wings and show people that he can do anything and that he's more than just a pretty...PRETTY face. *Sigh*

It will so suck not having him in my house every week :(

I would LOVE to see Tom take on other roles, and I wish I weren't so nervous about him disappearing behind the cameras when Smallville is over. In my ideal fantasy, Tom would have been offered the Superman film (because he would rock the part and he deserves it), but he would have turned it down, and then announced that he was joining a completely different big-screen project, preferably as a sexy bad boy. :)

I love your 'ideal fantasy'. He was such a good Clark Luthor!!! But I also agree with rkc_erica that he should extend his acting chops to other roles and find success on the big screen.

Tom IMHO is the quintessential Superman. Still, I have to admit that this Cavill fella seems not a bad choice as far as looks are concerned. I don't know him.

I too am increasingly worried about Tom's disappearance come May. Let's hope the announcement you speak of comes to pass! :)

Guuuuuuuuurl. Thanks for the scans. Between Henry and Tom I do believe I have the vapors. ;-)

It's always my pleasure! I've never seen Henry Cavill in anything, but I've been meaning to check out The Tudors for a long time, and now I have the perfect reason to make it a priority.

Well, I wish Henry luck, but I won't be seeing it.

As for Tom, I'm hoping he'll spread his wings and pursue movie work soon. Or TV work. Or just any work that puts him in front of a camera.

To me, Tom is really the ideal Superman. So, I'm happy to retire on his portrayal of the character for a while.

You already know how much I agree with you on that!

I'm disappointed I can't look forward to Tom on the big screen in a major movie, but I'm not heartbroken he won't be Snyder's Superman. Nothing I've heard so far gives me confidence in the film.

To me, Tom is really the ideal Superman.

I think so, too. I hope the Smallville finale gives us a last look at the wonderful character Tom has created that is rich with Superman moments. And by that, I don't mean the suit.

I understand just how you feel, believe me.

That belt buckle is awesome. I didn't notice it until I scanned the article.

See and this isn't just my Tom bias showing, I fully believe that Henry looks too 'old' to play a young Superman. He says that he came to Nolan's attention while auditioning for for Bruce and he LOOKS like a 'Bruce'.
Still as much as I wish him luck ( and this is coming from a fellow Brit) Tom will always be MY Superman
tariel22 From: tariel22 Date: February 18th, 2011 03:45 am (UTC) (Link)
He looks older than Tom to me, and he's six years younger. :) I agree, he looks more like a Bruce than a Clark to me, but they haven't worked their movie magic on him yet.

We'll always have ten years of Tom, and I'm so thankful for that.

If this becomes a franchise, I want Tom as Vandal Savage, all sexy & evil & scene-stealing!
tariel22 From: tariel22 Date: February 18th, 2011 03:49 am (UTC) (Link)
Wouldn't that be awesome? I must admit, I spend an inordinate amount of my day fantasizing about all the possible roles Tom could play now that his life is once more his own.

omg This guy is so HOT! i saw him in the tudors and he's a great actor as well :D
tariel22 From: tariel22 Date: February 18th, 2011 03:53 am (UTC) (Link)
He's gorgeous! Friends have been raving over him in The Tudors for years now (and suggesting him for Superman whenever the subject of another film came up). I am determined to finally watch that show and find out what all the fuss is about.

I swear to God you are amazing with how quickly you post this stuff. I was just thinking that I needed to go out and buy this issue.

I think Henry is extremely handsome. He has a great smile. The truth is that nothing will keep me from seeing this movie even if it turns out to be a trainwreck. I'm too big of a Superman fan to not see it. Basically everything I've heard about it thus far has not been encouraging. But I'll be there.

But truly, as handsome as Henry is....his face actually looks plain to me next to Tom's face. Henry is a very handsome man and he seems like a sweetheart from the interviews. Tom Welling is a stunningly beautiful man who manages to convey humility and strength at the same time through both good scripts and not so good scripts.

I really don't care what anyone says. No one will ever convince me that anyone has ever (or will ever) play Superman better than Tom has. The only person that I think has ever managed to capture the same majestic quality as the hero was Christopher Reeve himself in his prime. As much as I love the other men who have played Supes (and I do love them all)....Tom is the only one who has ever been in Reeve's league.

It hurts to see this cover right now as we are waiting so anxiously to see how they end the show. I had to remind myself today that Tom was on the cover of EW himself back when the show premiered and that he was on the cover of TVguide back in the summer prior to ComicCon. I hoping he gets another TVguide cover before the end of the series. He deserves it. In a way, I'm glad this is happening now though. It would have stung more to see this cover in April or May as we approach the very end of the series.

And on a shallow note, Tom looks unfreaking believable in the latest stills. Holy shit. Somebody's been working out. He is LEAN. You can see it so clearly in his face and neck and around his waist. His face looks so sculpted right now. Good God.

I don't know if I'll rush to the theaters when it first comes out, but I'll definitely see it, for the same reason, and hope for the best. I agree that the news so far, what little there is, only makes me wary.

For me, I know how completely Tom embodies the vision of Superman I hold dear. Henry Cavill is an unknown. He could very well be amazing in this film, but he'll never be Tom, and in two hours he'll never have the chance to give Clark Kent the emotional depth and richness of character that Tom has over the past ten years. Tom Welling will always be my Superman, even if he never dons the suit.

I certainly hope Tom gets another TV Guide cover to mark the end of Smallville. How many shows last 10 years? And YES, Tom takes my breath away in that still from Scion. Wow.

Ack. I'd be more impressed with this article and photo spread if EW wasn't owned by WB. It just seems very obvious and the fact that it really doesn't have any actual/new information in it doesn't help.

Also, don't try to sell us on a guy by telling us about all the parts he didn't get.
tariel22 From: tariel22 Date: February 18th, 2011 04:24 am (UTC) (Link)
I know, it's all so incestuous, isn't it? Another reminder that it's all about business in the end, not genuine excitement over the promise of a new creative endeavor.

Also, don't try to sell us on a guy by telling us about all the parts he didn't get.

LOL! "I came very close." As the old saying goes, close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades. ;)

Hm. I'm not really feeling it TBH.
So basically, I have the same reaction to Cavill as Superman as I do to Hathaway as Catwoman - could have been better; could have been worse.
And like many others have already said, Welling is *my* Superman. He cemented his place there, and took that title form Reeve. So I'm afraid no matter whom they cast for this movie, poor bastard really doesn't stand the chance with me. :))

Also, from what I heard of this movie I have as much faith in it turning interesting or good as I have in the new Wonder Woman series. Not much.

IDK what I feel about this guy. I guess if Tom can't do it then he's the next best thing? Way better than BR, that's for sure. But I'm with you, that gorgeous man (and his man!boobs) will always be Superman to me.

I'm just holding out hope that Tom goes on to play a bad boy in a feature film. I want to see skin, I was to see attitude, I want to see sex. LOL!!

OK, that Cavill guy is handsome, and in the smile pic he´s even cute. But here comes the point: he´s just normally handsome, whereas Tom is divinely beautiful. That can´t be topped! Never! :)

I trust that he does fine in the movie. Somehow I am almost relieved that Tom won´t be Supes in that movie. First we don´t know whether the script is any good, second I think he should play something completely different after SV, not just more of the same. Also, I am not sure if Tom is even interested in something that big. It seems to me he can barely cope with all the fan love and fan attention already now, so how would he do it when he´s really world-famous? Buy an own island like Depp? lol

He's definitely good-looking, but if I'd had to pick a non-Tom person for the role, I'd have picked Matt Bomer. He's even done some random ad in the Superman suit, and he so looks the part!

Henry Cavill has been a favorite of mine but he can't match Tom as Superman. I'll certainly see the movie but I hate the hair style. I like Henry's normal hair...lol Thanks for the pics T! ;)

Thank you for the scans! I have to say when the magazine arrived in my mail it saddened me. I've always been a huge Superman fan and comic book reader. Tom is my Superman and I think he is the best choice, but I never expected him to be in the movie. I was rooting for Henry Cavill. I absolutely loved The Tudors and Charles was my favorite character. I really just want a good Superman movie and for the franchise to do well, but right now I'm all about our Clark Kent/Tom becoming Superman. Seeing Henry on the cover makes me feel like Tom is already passing on the torch and he hasn't finished his journey yet. I'm selfish and want the attention on Tom. With that said, Tom is probably more than happy to have the attention for the character to move on to someone else. It may help his career to have someone else take over the role so quickly after SV ends and I'm over the top ready for Tom to do something else. I just hope he doesn't make us wait too long. *crosses fingers*
