Smallville: Interviews with Lindsay Hartley
Lindsay Hartley (Justin Hartley's wife) appears in tonight's episode of Smallville as Mad Harriet, and has been making the rounds with TV journalists to talk about her role. My favorite was her interview with Sara Bibel for Fancast:

How did working with Tom Welling compare to all the hot men on daytime TV?
He’s pretty cute, I must say. His eyes are just stunning. He’s gorgeous. I’m sure everyone in the world would say that. I always say ‘Smallville’s’ got the two best looking guys in the world on TV. If you’re into the brunette thing, you’ve got Tom. If you’re into the dirty blonde, you’ve got my husband [Justin Hartley, who plays Oliver/Green Arrow]. I love Tom – he’s sweet, loving. We get along so well.

Though you did not have scenes together, you got to work with your husband Justin. You also worked together on ‘Passions.’ What was it like being in the same “office” again?
It was awesome. My husband is such a giver, such a supporter. I was so happy to experience what he experiences. It’s a little, tiny taste of what he goes through. I’ve been up there [in Vancouver] so many times with [our daughter] Bella to watch him work, to be the wife, be the mother. It was really cool to be an actor as well, and to go through what he goes through.

Oftentimes when co-stars become romantically involved, the relationship does not last once they stop working together. What has been your secret?
Communication. Effort and communication, absolutely. We both love each other and we want it to work. There’s no gray area there. It’s pretty simple. We talk about everything and you are on the same page and on the same team. I think sometimes people forget that they’re partners. We’re just having a blast, too. We’re really lucky. Life has been so great for us. We have an amazing child, we’re both working in this difficult business…. When I left ‘Days of Our Lives,’ I was like, “I don’t know if I’m ever working again. I’m going to do the best I can. If it happens, great. If not, well… it sucks for me.”

How do you and Justin manage to spend time together with you working in L.A. and him in Vancouver?
We have a “two week rule.” We never go more than two weeks without seeing each other. We make the effort. Someone’s got to fly, and it’s usually him because it’s easier for him to commute than to have me come up with Bella, plus I have to board the dog because I’m leaving the house. He’s coming home Saturday and leaving Monday, so it’s going to be a quick trip this weekend. The beginning of the year we were really lucky because he had a lot of time in L.A.

Lindsay's interview with Brian Truitt from USA Weekend includes a clip of Mad Harriet's first encounter with Clark:

I’m a comic book nerd, so I’m familiar with Mad Harriet from the source material. How much of the character is tweaked for Smallville?
I know she’s an alien, right? That wasn’t so much in the show. It was more that she was powered by Kryptonite. It’s what gives her superhuman strength, and then that causes the claws to have the power over Clark. I think a lot of it, though, was very similar to the stories. Granny Goodness took her in and she is the leader of this pack that has a higher destiny. In that sense, yeah, it was like right on.

Your getup and the claws look pretty fantastic.
It was so fun! [Laughs] It was like totally ridiculous, too, because the hand thing was ginormous. It was bigger than my face. Actually, they modeled it after the Freddy Krueger hand. I thought that was really cool. I had to send them a copy of my hand and through that, they made this handpiece that I would put my hand inside and then they would tie it together with these leather straps. I actually had the ability to control the hand. It was pretty awesome.

Are you pretty close with the Smallville cast through your husband?
I’ve known Tom now for a long time — Justin and Tom have a relationship obviously outside of work. And I’ve gotten to know Cassidy [Freeman] the past few years. For me, everything was fun because I got to actually work with the people who I have a relationship with. Usually when I’m there, I’ve got Bella and I’m just full 100-percent mom and 100-percent wife supporting Justin, but this time he came out with me and took photos and stuff, and we were just were hanging out and relaxing and letting me work.

Lindsay also talked to Omar Nobles from Soap Opera Source:

Soap Opera Source: So tell me about the character you're playing on Smallville. I hear Mad Harriet is kind of a bad ass.
Hartley:
Mad Harriet is a DC Comics character. She's an alien and she was brought up by this woman named Granny Goodness [guest star Christine Willes] who has this team of female fighters. Basically she's bringing up this team – there's one with a whip who's another comic book character, and then there's my character Mad Harriet. She's the leader of this group of women. On the show she's powered by kryptonite and the kryptonite makes her claws dangerous to anyone and gives her superhuman strength. Then of course she attacks Clark because you have to attack him when you have kryptonite. Then they have a little fight and she fights with Tess Mercer as well. She's there to protect Granny Goodness and the other team of women.

Soap Opera Source: How was your fight scene with Tom?
Hartley:
I actually had more of a fight sequence with Cassidy. I just kind of push Clark around a little bit. Basically when Clark's around kryptonite he's so weak that he has no ability to fight. So she kind of smacks him around a little bit with her claw hand. [Laughs]

Another interview, with Troy Rogers from The Deadbolt:

THE DEADBOLT: What kind of advice did Justin [Hartley] give you before you joined the cast?

HARTLEY: That's a really good question. You know what? Have fun. That's his motto in life, "Have fun," and I did. I had a blast. It was so much fun working on that show. It was just great. I mean, I was honored to be a part of it because it's been running for ten years with such an amazing cast and crew. That's a long time and what an amazing fan base to keep that show on the air like that. I had also been friends with some of the cast and crew and to be able to be a part of it from the other perspective, from the business side, is really cool.

ETA: Lindsay also gave a little scoop to EW's Hollywood Insider:

How long until we get back to the Darkseid plot on Smallville? That needs to ramp up soon, right?
For the answer to this one, we asked Lindsay Hartley — wife of Green Arrow Justin Hartley — who guest stars on tonight’s episode as the clawed (and crazy!) Mad Harriet. “There is a story of Darkseid coming, and that’s at the end of the [episode],” she teases. Send all thanks her way.

Awww, she sounds like a sweetheart. And she says such lovely things about Tom (and her husband, but well, Duh! LOL). Nice to know that Justin and Tom have an off screen relationship that extends to their families.

My sister was a big Passions fan, and has been raving about Lindsay for years. I have to say I understand why now. She seems so nice, and so upbeat!

I love the idea of Tom and Justin being friends. And somehow it helps make up for what an ass Oliver has been to Clark on the show. :)

I think I really really like this woman.

Me, too! She and Justin are both so charming! I liked her in the episode, too.

Every time the Hartleys talk about each other, it's obvious they are madly in love. Lindsay sounds completely down to earth, and she's always so positive. I'm glad she had the chance to be on the show.

There are some pics that surfaced on the web today of the two of them waiting on the mens bathroom line at a hockey game. So, apparently, they do hang out. And go to the bathroom together.

Do you mind sharing links to these pics if you have them? Maybe I'm being voyeuristic, but...

Thanks, Val! You're awesome. :-)

If I was a guy, and I was peeing next to TW, I wonder if I would be tempted to take a peek? ;-)

It made me squee a lot! :) I love the idea of them being friends.

She has such a positive outlook on everything. I found myself with a big smile on my face as I read all her interviews.

D'awww! How do Tom & Justin walk around Van without giving people fainting spells?! Yay for LH for sharing! (And cool that CF is a pal as well!)

I'm glad to hear they're friends outside of the show. No wonder Smallville has such a happy set, they all seem to get along famously!

It's funny, they have such different personalities when it comes to fan/paparazzi encounters. Justin is known for being outgoing with everyone, and is happy to sign autographs or take pics (except when his daughter is there), while Tom is of course elusive and shy. Kind of like Michael and Tom.

I guess the whole Hartley family is part of the Tom Welling fan club! :-) And why not? Thanks for sharing & posting all of these interviews!

I think the feeling is mutual! Remember Tom waving to Bella at the end of the SDCC panel last year? :)
