I worship at the television altar
Smallville: TV Guide scans
My TV Guide didn't arrive yesterday, so instead of the current issue, check out the one from December 8-14, 2001, featuring a new show called Smallville! :) Click for BIGGER.

There were four different covers that week, all by Alex Ross. Together they made one panoramic picture. Clickable thumbnails of the other three:

My favorite quote from the article is what Warner Bros. Television president Peter Roth says about Michael Rosenbaum: "You couldn't ask for a better, more dimensional Lex. He combines a wonderful arrogance with that terrifyingly unclear agenda." Another interesting tidbit is that even way back then, they were saying that Chloe was related to Lois Lane.

The issue even included a Smallville comic!

Oh wow. I never saw some of those. Thanks T! :) I love the cover with Clark and look how young!

They were all new to me, too! It's interesting to see how the actors were perceived in those early days.

Hi! *waves* I love these early articles. I didn't realize how much (well-deserved) respect Michael got from the press right from the start, that has been especially gratifying to discover.

Thanks for the add! *adds you back*

Thank you for posting this! I remember buying this issue way back when. I have no idea what happened to it. I must have gotten lost in the abyss of my boxes and old papers. :) So glad you have it!

Yes, Al and Miles have been stating that Lois was going to be Chloe's cousin since the first season. I believe they actually confirmed it at a Comic Con appearance prior to the pilot even airing on television. That was always their plan. They also said early on that Clark's relationships with Lana and Chloe were supposed to be combined to form his relationship with Lois in the future. The love/lust+ the friendship = Lois. And then of course, Allison and Kristin confirmed that Tom saw Lana+Chloe as Clark's dream woman. Yet, people will swear to you over and over again that this was not the case. It's hard to argue with print though, isn't it? :)

I had no idea they intended from the start to introduce Lois on Smallville. I doubt they were thinking she would be a series regular way back when, but I'm sure they never dreamed the show would go for ten years either! :)

I've heard the Lana + Chloe = Lois concept before, and I think that was an inspired way to approach things on the show. Once they added the actual Lois to the mix, though, it became problematic, and I felt like they had one girl too many more than once. I also always thought Jeph Loeb had a point when he said Chloe = comic book Lana.

What has surprised me about these early articles is how much of the media coverage focused on just Clark, Lex, and Lana. I think it's a huge testament to Allison Mack's talent and appeal that she emerged as a fan favorite, and that Chloe eventually earned a much more prominent role on the show and in Clark's life. But in the beginning, Chloe was rarely even mentioned in articles about the show.

Thanks for the cool scans. Not sure I'm loving that Tom drawing, but still, its awesome that Tom was drawn by Alex Ross. His stuff is incredible!

Did you ever see the pictures Alex Ross did of Tom actually as Superman back in 2004?

Wow! More terrific scans! It's kind of a treasure for a fan like me who came late in the fandom!

Aw, thanks for that! Memory lane...

I've never seen that comic - love Lex propping himself against Clark's shoulder!

Isn't that too funny? I got home last night and my TV Guide didn't even come! :) These were tough to scan. Back then TV Guides were still in that thick little book format. It took me multiple tries on almost every page to get an image that wasn't crooked, or didn't have an unacceptable gutter shadow. When it comes to my scans, I have certain standards. :D

That was my favorite frame of the comic as well. He looks so comfy there. ♥

Thanks for scanning these. I know I must have read that article before, but it's been so long that I don't remember it! LOL. It's always so interesting to read these old articles and see what they had initially planned compared to what they actually did.

Never saw that comic either, or the Kevin Smith article. Really enjoyed both of them. Thank so much for sharing.

The infamous Alex Ross covers weren't my favorite drawings either, although I do love the great tribute. That reminds me of not only the 2 wonderful drawings Ross did of Tom as Superman, but the awesome poster with just Tom and Christopher Reeve that was given out with one of the Season DVD sets if purchased at Best Buy. I ran around to 3 or 4 different Best Buys on the first day trying to find one and never did. Man, I was so mad!

I'll have to find that picture and post it. It's a big favorite.

I was just saying the same thing upthread. There are a number of things they said they would never do, that of course they did. I think it's interesting to ponder how the show evolved over time, and why.

I'm so glad you enjoyed the scans. The thorough coverage TV Guide gave the show is impressive. Of course I had to go looking for that poster after you mentioned it, but I only found a small image. Thanks again for sharing your larger one!

As usual, some interesting dialogue has come out of your post! The scan was amazing. Good work!!

I love the early interviews where everyone is full of promise and isn't as guarded and controlled as they seem to be at times now.

And what babies they all are!! So young!!

See, I learn as much from the comments as I do from the articles!

I love how unguarded Tom was. Until recently I had no idea he was ever like that. I can understand why he has grown wary, though. Success as an actor is definitely a double-edged sword.

And what babies they all are!!

I was just saying the same thing to Whimsy! :)

More scans...you're amazing! These are such treasures and I love every minute of getting to see them. Thank you so much for bringing them all to us! *hugs*
