Judging by the sides, I would say that Aly is the lead, because the whole story revolves around her and her relationships (with Savannah, Dan, Lewis, Alice, and her mother), and her part is the one with all the emotional depth. Also, Tom focused on Aly's character when he talked about the show at the Upfronts. However, Ashley's role is a close second, and in the latest sides they've really added some layers to her character in terms of her personal history that I think make her a lot more interesting.

I've seen a couple of cheer-oriented sites totally bash Hellcats based on the first couple of promos (before the extended sneak peek was released), but I've seen plenty of individual cheerleaders (mostly on Twitter) express a lot of excitement about it. One Vancouver cheerleader made this comment on one of the negative reviews:

FYI, the producers and choreographers held auditions at our cheer gym. There are about a dozen of our cheerleaders in Hellcats, and the producer and Tom Welling talked to a bunch of us at the audition to learn more about the sport. So yes, they did ask legit all-star cheerleaders about what cheerleading is really about. They took the information we gave them and used what they could. [source]

Doesn't that sound just like Tom? I've liked everything I've seen so far, and most of what I've read (I didn't like the Red character in the original sides, but the rewrites look much better), so I'm really looking forward to seeing the show. As you say, though, it remains to be seen what the show truly will be. I have high hopes, and whatever happens, I'm just so proud of Tom that his production company's first project is receiving this much attention, both from the network and the fans.

Sharpay's Fabulous Adventure is a DCOM (Disney Channel Original Movie), a spin-off from the HSM (High School Musical) series, where Ashley's character Sharpay pursues her dream on Broadway. It just finished filming in Toronto.
