Smallville: Annette O'Toole and Michael McKean talk to E!Online
Annette O'Toole and Michael McKean talked to Megan Masters from E!Online's Watch With Kristin about their return to Smallville in this week's Hostage. Expect more interviews with this great couple to follow, they made the rounds with the media today. I was intrigued by this quote from Annette:

"Tom gave me a cheat sheet of what's been going on and told me, 'Well now I'm this guy they call The Blur in this Matrix-looking outfit.'"

I love that Tom was the one to bring her up to speed. I wonder what made the list, what story elements he (yes, in my fantasy he made the list himself) considers to be the most significant.

Smallville Reunion! What Martha's Return Means for Clark Kent
Wed., May 5, 2010 5:11 PM PDT
by Megan Masters

Talk about some major mama drama!

This Friday's episode of Smallville marks the return of everyone's favorite Supermom, Martha Kent, and she's bringing along a little surprise—new man candy, Perry White. What's this mean for the blue-and-red-leotarded one?

We'll let returning twosome (and real-life married folk) Annette O'Toole and Michael McKean do the talking...

Welcome back! We've missed seeing both of your faces on Smallville over the past several years. What can you tell us about your "Hostage" return?
Anntte O'Toole:
There are some lovely scenes. I have some good stuff with Tom [Welling] and good stuff with Erica [Durance]. The person I don't have a ton to do with is Michael, actually. [Laughs.] We saved that for the hotel room. You have so many things you want to accomplish in these shows, and you've got one episode to do it in. They have to be really true to their concept of these characters, and they were lovely about including things that I felt and cared about. Hopefully the fans will like it. It's just amazing to me people are so involved in the lives of these characters.

Did either of you ever think that after nearly 10 years, Smallville would still be, pardon the pun, such a thriving Metropolis?
Michael McKean:
We're actually entering our 70th decade of Superman.
AOT: Most shows don't run past four years. This is amazing to me. It's not surprising when you look back and see what we've put into it—the care and the tending of these characters has always been really good.
M.M.: Making the impossible come true led to this being real. Spending lots of time and lots of money on the special effects has made every episode like a little movie. This is convincing stuff, and Smallville is the first great post-X-Files series. People are watching the show now in their late teens who were in single digits when the show started, when they became involved with the characters. They've watched them grow and watched them make mistakes and survive—it's an emotional commitment.

Let's get to it: How did the romance between Perry White and Martha Kent come to be?
M.M.:
It's more of a peripheral thing.
AOT: She ran into him at a committee hearing. Actors always have to make things up, so it makes sense to them, so I figure that when Martha was in college, Perry was a very famous journalist and probably came to speak at her college. I like to think she had a crush on him and there could have been a romance if not for this man named Jonathan Kent.

Clark's been in a pretty dark place this season. How does he react to the news that Martha's moved on?
AOT:
Martha's about duty and love and protection, that's her main thing. Tom gave me a cheat sheet of what's been going on and told me, "Well now I'm this guy they call The Blur in this Matrix-looking outfit." I couldn't understand why Martha wasn't going back to the farm! All I know is that we have some really nice stuff together. It's not like we just make pie—we really go in-depth about the way we feel and what's going on.

What about the much-talked-about interaction between Perry White and Lois Lane?
M.M.:
It's a case of a Woodward finding her Bernstein. Perry is impressed right away with how sharp Lois is, and I've read some of her things and think she's talented. But it really kicks into high gear when we realize that the two of us have been working on the same story—two very, very different ends of the same story. We're all looking for the MacGuffin, if you will—a story that in itself is not all that fortunate. But it definitely is something that's going to move things forward. Perry and Lois are kindred spirits.

Fans are upset there's not much Perry-Chloe interaction. Is it possible we'll see the two of them together at any point in "Hostage"?
M.M.:
We never saw Allison [Mack]. We know her really well, and I was disappointed we didn't run into her. But our paths did not cross on page or in real life.

All right, give us one big tease to end on! What are you most looking forward to in Friday's episode of Smallville?
M.M.:
You do get to hear Perry say "great Caesar's ghost!" [Laughs.] I say it beautifully too. I don't praise my own work, but man, I nailed that line.
AOT: I think so, too.

To sum all of this up, there's a sort of resolution fans will ultimately get with Perry and Martha's return?
AOT:
Absolutely! Plus, there's action up the wazoo!

Tune into Smallville's "Hostage" Friday at 8 p.m. on the CW, and if you're in the mood for more Michael, don't miss his run on Celebrity Jeopardy through the end of the week—he's dominating, folks!

Man, they just keep coming today. I'm still reeling from the two stills released earlier. Gah. I don't want to get my hopes up really high and then have Doomsday happen all over again. But, you know, if they validate Clark's efforts all season, I can forgive a lot.

I want that kiss (and the implied knowledge) to stick, though!

I'm on a complete high from all the Smallville goodness today, and this interview makes Friday's episode sound like fun. I loved the Lois and Perry scene in the webclip.

I don't trust the show to validate Clark, they've failed me too many times on that front. :( At this point I'll settle for them letting him be both the hero and the star in the finale. I believe in Clark, and all the decisions he's made this season, no matter what message the show seems to be sending.

I want that kiss to mean what I think it means, and I want it to stick, too!

Yes, I'm actually looking forward to it now. Especially getting to hear Perry with his favorite swearing phrase.

Oh, I don't either. Not this late in the game. At least I know he is right according to his/Superman's belief system. I'm thinking I won't be bored for the finale, hopefully. Maybe throwing things at the tv.

I love that icon, btw.

LOL! I know that feeling! I yell, too. With profanity. :)

Isn't that a great icon? kissme_myfool made it. I've had it ever since Action first aired, and I don't think I'll ever get rid of it. That is one of my all-time favorite action sequences from the show.

I love that Tom gave her a cheatsheet. He's adorable. I don't understand why we don't have a dozen BTS stills from this ep.

I love the cheat sheet, too! They must have had a lovely reunion.

I have to believe that there are lots more pics that will emerge later. There's no way they let a photo op like this one slip through their fingers with just a few images to show for it.

Oh, how I wish AOT, MMK, TW and ED could have done a commentary for this episode!

I want to see Tommy's cheat sheet. Were there little drawings? ♥

I'm guessing not like the ones he made for Michael. ;) Does Tommy know how to draw things that aren't dirty? Although AOT strikes me as the kind of woman who would appreciate his sense of humor. :)
