Smallville: Brian Austin Green and Damian Holbrook on SHoE podcast

SHoE did a double podcast this week, with two very special guests. Derek and Steve were joined by actor Brian Austen Green for Upgrade, and TV Guide Magazine senior writer Damian Holbrook for Charade. I pretty much laughed my way through the whole thing. The podcast offered great insights into the episodes, spoilers for the finale, intriguing spec about what's coming up, and BAG talked at length about his character, and his experience filming Upgrade. Plus some other stuff I can't even describe, except to say it was hilarious. Smallville fans, be sure to check it out!

You can download the podcast at the Starkville House of El Podcast web site, or it's available for free on iTunes (look for episode #147).

I've transcribed just a few of my favorite quotes below. BAG didn't have any Tommy stories to tell this time, but he did describe a couple of deleted scenes. First he responded to fan queries he saw on the internet after the episode aired:

Question 1: How did Lois and John end up knowing where kryptonite was, where the truck was, where it was all being stored? Right? That was one of the ones I read. How did that happen? The scene in the basement, when she finds me, part of that scene was a conversation we had, and she said, listen, you know, I'm sorry that you're running low, and that you need to refuel, but it's not like that's an easy thing to find around town, you know, kryptonite. And I say in the scene, I have a built-in device that will actually find the closest source for me. I just need help getting there. I can't get there on my own. So she says, I'll take you, and I say, you can't take me, power-ups can be unpredictable, I don't want you to get hurt, and she says, I'm taking you, don't worry about it, and I say, as long as you just drop me off, you can't come in with me, you'll just drop me off, and she swears that she will. And then we leave. So that may answer some questions for you.

Then he talked about an alternate ending:

They had an ending, which I think was the setup for the return of the Metallo everyone had dreamed of seeing. And they left that out. He makes a choice, standing by himself on the street corner, that ended the show initially in the script... He put the mind control chip in his neck on his own, and decided to give up on humanity... In what we had, I was standing on the corner with the red kryptonite heart, I was wearing it, and put the chip in the back of my neck... I'm not sure why they chose to cut that, and they probably didn't want me talking about it.

You need to hear the fabulous Damian Holbrook dish about the show for yourself, believe me, but I did transcribe the tidbits he shared from his recent interview with Smallville executive producer Brian Peterson:

Here's the thing that Brian Peterson told me about, because I said to him point blank, I was like, "Martha is SO the Red Queen." And he started laughing, and, you know, he played it off, and he was like, "If I told you who the Red Queen was, I would just have to quit now." But when we started talking about what we'll see when she shows up with Perry, he used the term, "she comes back having evolved herself." Which means she will no longer be the earthy farm lady, and he stressed that we'll still have that amazing relationship, she will always remain the mother of Superman, and they'll always have that relationship, but we'll see a very different Martha.

I do know BP said that by the finale the two of them, Clark and Chloe, will be in a very good place together. They will have resolved a lot of their stuff, a lot of the stuff that came up last week in Upgrade, and they will be in a very positive place. And I asked him, I said, "Does Chloe get a happy ending?" And he just kind of paused, and he said, "Not yet."

I had asked for Twitter questions for Brian, last week I guess, and somebody had sent me one about Lotess? This emerging fan base of the Lois/Tess relationship? So I asked him, I was like, "What do you think of Lotess?" And he was like, "What the hell is Lotess?" And I said, apparently there are some people out there that are reading a lot more into the subtext of Lois and Tess scenes. Oh, he just started howling, but said that he sees more in the Chloe/Tess relationship.

[The Justice League members in the finale] are all going to be cameos. [Derek mentions that Alaina Huffman told him she has less screen time in Salvation than she did in Doomsday.] They're all going to be cameos because they really want the finale to be Clark's story. It's a big Clark story, we see some major moments, for Clark and Lois, a big development in the Chloe and Oliver story, and then of course what he described as, "Clark making a huge leap forward by making a very Superman choice." So read into that what you want.

Apparently the trailer? For the finale? Yeah. Brian Peterson said that he is SO excited, I've never heard a producer of any show that I've handled be so excited about just a trailer. He's just over the moon about whatever this trailer looks like... What was the thing that he said? It's iconic on an epic proportion, or something like that? So that's just huge! I mean, I don't know what that is, but I cannot WAIT to see it.

At the end he summed up the finale spoilers:

By the time we get to the finale, Chloe and Clark will be in a very good spot, they will have kind of made amends with each other for the things that they've done over the season. The actions of Perry and particularly Martha will be extraordinarily impactful on the season finale. They will not be in it, but the events and the things that they set off in Hostage will play out in the finale. We will have a momentous, and BP said he does not feel that he's over-selling it at all in saying that there is a huge Clark/Lois moment in the finale... I asked for an exclusive from Brian... [He says] Clark literally sees his destiny.
