OTOH, if they were building towards Charade all along, then they probably should have made that risky choice, because then, the emotional climax of the episode would say exactly what they were trying to say -- that Lois feels a deep connection to all the sides of Clark.

A controversial storyline with a meaningful payoff is a thing of beauty, and all those risks would have been more than worth it. Unfortunately, it seems Smallville rarely plans ahead with that level of complexity and care. And muddying the waters is exactly what they did as a result.

The writers/directors on this show often seem satisfied to get the backstory straight in their own minds, and are less concerned with communicating that story clearly onscreen. Recently Al Septien has been answering fan questions about past episodes on Twitter, and while it's wonderful to clear up some longstanding confusion, I can't help but wonder why the information was considered expendable in the first place.

I'm not sure if the problem is that they try to do too much within their 42-minute time frame, that they overestimate their storytelling skills, or if they erroneously think, as I believe Al Gough once said, that we don't care about the details.
