Smallville spoiler from Michael Ausiello!
From The Ausiello Files:

'Smallville' exclusive: Someone is going to [major spoiler alert]!
by Michael Ausiello
Mar 30 2010 06:22 PM ET

Smallville’s ninth season finale will feature a cameo by one of TV’s most feared guest stars: The Grim Reaper. Sources confirm to me exclusively that producers of the everlasting superhero saga are planning to kill off a major castmember in the May 14 capper. And if the death of “Jimmy Olsen” last May taught us anything, it’s that no one — and I mean no one — is safe on Smallville. Okay, Clark is safe. But everyone else is fair game. A few characters are particularly vulnerable, which is my roundabout way of me saying the victim is listed after the jump!

I can confirm that one of these eight folks will be in grave danger come May 14:

* Lois: Okay, Clark and Lois are safe. But everyone else is fair game.

* Chloe: Allison Mack doesn’t have a contract for next season yet. Just putting that out there. Also, can you think of a more compelling hook to season 10 than Clark attempting to avenge the death of his BFF — a character who just so happens to live outside the jurisdiction of DC Comics’ mythos police?

* Lana: Rumor has it Kristin Kreuk was spotted on the Smallville set this week. Rumor also has it I fabricated the above rumor just to make trouble. Finally, there’s a rumor going around that one of the previous two rumors is 100 percent true. All joking aside, rumor has it KK is currently in Vancouver. Or is she? I’ve said too much!

* Perry: His return later this season is top-secret… so top-secret it makes one wonder.

* Martha: Her return later this season is top-secret… so top-secret it makes one wonder.

* Oliver: Green Arrow is a DC Comics property, but so was Jimmy Olsen. Death by loophole, perhaps?

* Tess: With Michael Rosenbaum attached to a new series, the odds of him returning as Lex have never been smaller. What does that mean for his placeholder? I imagine only bad things.

* Zod: He’s this season’s Big Bad. And by my calculations, this season is almost up.

So, who’s dying?! That’s for me to know and you to find out spend the next two months obsessing over in the comments section.

SOURCE

Okay, I played this game last year, and it drove me nuts, BIG time. I don't think I want to go there again. Also, I hate the way death spoilers exacerbate the shipper wars, although I'm confused as to why there still ARE shipper wars in this fandom. Anyway, all I'm going to say is, I don't think they will or should kill off Chloe, whether Allison Mack is returning or not, and I'll be really upset if they get rid of Tess, so I'm guessing it will be Zod. What about you guys? Who do you want to see die, and who do you think will?

It's tiresome that they're hyping a death, again.. And yes, it exacerbates 'shipper battles.

My guess would be Zod - Tess, Waller and Darkseid for the S10 villains.

I liked your idea on Twitter! So much more imaginative, and sexy, too! :)

I'm bracing myself for ugliness. *sigh*

Zod seems like the only logical choice to me. But since when has this show been logical?

Can they really kill zod though? I mean usually they just put him in the phantom zone. so it could be him, but it couldn't. good chances though.

I'm also thinking Chloe. and hoping it's her. I just wish they took care of it last season instead of killing off poor jimmy =(

and tess is a possibility. I'd hate to see her go though, cause I love her character so much! You just never know with her.
tariel22 From: tariel22 Date: March 31st, 2010 12:12 am (UTC) (Link)
Well, this Zod is a clone, not the real Zod, so I guess technically he's expendable. Like Lara and Zor-El in S7.

They could kill off Chloe, but I'm afraid they would make it Clark's fault, and I don't want to see that. I'm not happy with Chloe this season, but I don't want to see her die. I didn't want to see Jimmy die, either.

Tess is another question mark, but like you, I love her! And Cassidy is such a talented actress! They have to bring her back!

Where the spirits of their older and truly villainous selves can inhabit their bodies, and thus be perfectly positioned to bust out and be pains in Clark's ass about 10 or 15 years down the line.

Well, that makes so much sense it's almost poetic! I'll admit that some part of me has been waiting for Tess to find and destroy the orb from which the Kandorians originally emerged, making them all go poof, because like Lara in Blue, they're not really supposed to be there. But there are so many of them, that would just look like genocide. Not to mention it would be terribly anti-climatic. :)

Your logic about Chloe's probable fate is unassailable, but I think I'm in denial because I so don't want to see it go down that way. I don't want to see Chloe martyred any more than I wanted to see Lana exit a superhero. I don't like the implications for Clark. :(

I had hoped that all Dr. Fate meant was that Chloe was in danger of losing her true self to the role she played for the organization she serves, but I guess that wouldn't make his warning very prophetic.

Ugh, all this speculation ties me up in knots!

I swear, our brains are hooked up somehow. I've been figuring that Zod would end up in the PZ by the end of his storyline, so as to conveniently solve the problem of incorporeal Phantom!Zod not matching comics or Donner!verse canon. Does possession by a phantom (and by implication, annihilation of the identity/self) count as a death? I'd completely forgotten about Faora, but you're right — she'll go with him, whenever he goes. (I could have sworn I read something about the producers having a two-season plan for Zod that could be wrapped up in one if they didn't get a renewal.... but I might just be imagining things.)

And I think a lot of things hinged on whether or not they could get Michael Rosenbaum back for any episodes in S10... since they're not, I think Tess is safe; if they kill her, they'll just have to introduce someone else to run Luthorcorp. Unless they want to turn it over entirely to Oliver. Plus they've now connected her to Checkmate, which could conceivably be a recurring storyline in S10... so her character has roots.

Oliver, I think, is safe from death; I can't imagine that they would kill him, not when they're getting their ducks in a row with mainstream DC. Plus, my understanding is that Justin Hartley falls in a convenient-for-SV budget loophole, meaning he's paid by the network and not the show, so they might as well keep him if it gives them a cast member without paying for him.

I honestly thought that they were waiting to start contract negotiations with Alison Mack until they found out whether they could get Michael Rosenbaum (and how much they'd have to pay him). I have to say that I agree with your ideas about Chloe... I think they're setting her up for Pandora!revisited at the end of the season.

The teasing about Kristin Kreuk is driving me up a wall. Either he made it up or he didn't. He probably did, right? Either way, they've got a huge glaring plot hole if they're facing an army of powered-up Kryptonians menacing earth and they don't at least mention Lana — considering that she's walking Kryptonite now. It'd solve a couple of narrative problems nicely if she comes back and is no longer glowing green...

It's because you're both meta geniuses. I love that I have the benefit of your and LaT's interpretations of this show, believe me! :)

I think the KK stuff is all nonsense. And as much as I would love a better resolution between Clark and Lana, I suspect we will never hear from or about her again, especially if Kristin's pilot is picked up.

I'll be surprised if AM returns. Her talents are underutilized now, IMO, and she has to be expensive. I don't think they know what to do with Chloe, and I don't think they can afford Allison. The only question in my mind is how Chloe will exit the story. But that's probably just my personal bias talking. If all Chloe is going to do is snipe at Clark and go against him behind his back, I'd rather see the resources held in reserve for AM's salary used for something else.

This is a new and exciting spoiler/twist that they have never done before!!

(sorry, coming down from caffeine day)

I know! I think that's the worst part, the unoriginality of it all! But see, now we know they mean business when they threaten death, because last season they killed JIMMY! And it STUCK!

I swear, S9 looks more like S8 every day.

My money is on Zod, and I think it should be Zod.

For me, if this season is going to end right, and validate Clark, then Zod should die, but not before he actually does something heroic to help Clark. That way we can move on from Zod, which, lets face it, was never a 2 season villian. We can validate Clark's choice, because he believed that Zod deserved a 2nd chance, and so he did. And we move the storyline onto the real Big Bad, which seems to be this Checkmate plot, with Waller and Maxwell Lord.

So, Zod is my guess.

Of course this is SV, and I'm very rarely right, so it will probably be Tess, or worse, Chloe dying in heroic fashion, and Clark blaming himself for her death. *yawn*

Have I mentioned lately how much I adore you? I'm believing in you like Tinkerbell!

Seriously, though, how sad is it that the outcome that so honors our hero also seems so unlikely? I hope the show proves my cynicism to be unwarranted.
starry_dawn From: starry_dawn Date: March 31st, 2010 12:56 am (UTC) (Link)
I think it's one of these three: Zod, Tess or Chloe. I don't want to see either Tess or Chloe die, but who knows with these people? And that's about all I'm going to speculate. The death's happening whether or not we like it. We might as well sit back and enjoy the rest of the season instead of breaking our heads over this, right? :)

Wise words. I always allow myself to be emotionally manipulated by spoilers like this one. Which is why I'm spoiler-free for every other show I watch! I just can't resist anything when it comes to Smallville.

I want to know what that whole annoying part about Kristin Kreuk was. Was there any truth to that at all. I really wish that Ausiello would just dish out the spoilers straight, without the sarcasm and ego and such.

The obvious answer in my opinion would be that Chloe is dying since AM's contract is ending. However, they fooled me last year with Jimmy's death so who knows? I thought that Callum had a 2 year contract, but that doesn't mean they have to actually keep him around for a second year, so I don't know...

So tired of the "who's going to die?" spoiler nonsense...

Forgive me if my comment sounds short on patience, I'm having a very grouchy day.
tariel22 From: tariel22 Date: March 31st, 2010 01:32 am (UTC) (Link)
I think the KK stuff was supposed to be funny. :P

I don't know what to expect from this show, ever. We both know a contract is no guarantee of safety, so pretty much anything is possible. And I'm tired of the "who's going to die?" spoilers, too, from all my shows!

Don't apologize! I'm sorry you're having a grumpy day, but your reaction would be understandable even if you weren't. :)

*crosses fingers* IT BETTER NOT BE TESS! Or ill be crying longer than i did for Jimmy! :P LOL
PLease be Zod or Chloe!!

I agree, of those three Tess is by far my favorite!

I watched Identity last night, it made me miss Jimmy all over again. *sigh*

I really hope they kill Zod and the rest of the Kandorians. lol (And a wouldn't mind a couple of other characters disappearing for ever too. If they don't actually die, they could be sent to another city where they could live happily off screen while I was left a happier viewer);)
tariel22 From: tariel22 Date: April 1st, 2010 12:09 pm (UTC) (Link)
LOL! I like the way you think, Carol! One part of the Kandorian storyline really bothers me: I don't think they belong on Earth. It reminds me of that line of Clark's in Splinter: "I thought I was the last son of Krypton, but you people keep popping up."
whimsywinx From: whimsywinx Date: March 31st, 2010 06:37 pm (UTC) (Link)
I hate Auseillo. But my money's on Zod, because I don't see last year's big bad around these days.
tariel22 From: tariel22 Date: April 1st, 2010 12:15 pm (UTC) (Link)
I hope you're right, even though that means saying goodbye to Callum Blue. :(

I'm not crazy about Ausiello either, but the show gives him all the best spoilers, so I follow him religiously. I'm a complete spoiler whore when it comes to Smallville.

All the drama TPTB created last year with their cryptic hints and spoilers about who was going to die drove me crazy. Fandom was in an uproar by the time Doomsday aired, and I hated what they did to Jimmy in that episode. Like you, I refuse to be drawn in again.
