Smallville renewed for S10!!
From The Ausiello Files:

This Just In: The CW renews 'Smallville'
by Michael Ausiello
Mar 4 2010 05:33 PM ET

It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s the news Smallville fans have been waiting for: The CW has renewed the show for a 10th season!

The news hardly comes as a surprise given how well the show has been performing in its new Friday timeslot. As The CW points out, the drama has “dramatically improved” the network’s performance on the night in all major demo categories, including adults 18-34 (up 67 percent) men 18-34 (up 200 percent), adults 18-49 (up 75 percent), men 18-49 (183 percent) and total viewers (74 percent).

Two weeks ago, The CW extended early renewals to Gossip Girl, 90210, The Vampire Diaries, Supernatural, and America’s Next Top Model.

Official press release from the CW:

SMALLVILLE TO RETURN FOR A TENTH SEASON ON THE CW
March 4, 2010 at 6:44 pm

The CW Network has announced that its hit series SMALLVILLE will return in the fall of 2010 for a momentous tenth season.

SMALLVILLE, a modern retelling of the Superman legend, stars Tom Welling as Clark Kent. The series moved to Friday nights this season, where it currently ranks as network television’s #1 show in its time period among men 18-34 and men 18-49. Additionally, SMALLVILLE has dramatically improved The CW’s ratings performance in its Friday 8:00-9:00p.m.time period by 67% among adults 18-34 (1.5/6), 200% in men 18-34 (1.8/7), 75% in adults 18-49 (1.4/5), 183% in men 18-49 (1.7/6) and 74% in total viewers (3.12million).

SMALLVILLE joins the five previously announced series – THE VAMPIRE DIARIES, GOSSIP GIRL, 90210, SUPERNATURAL, and AMERICA’S NEXT TOP MODEL – which will all return for another season on The CW.

SMALLVILLE was developed for television by Alfred Gough & Miles Millar (“Shanghai Noon,” “The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor”), based on the DC Comics characters. Kelly Souders & Brian Peterson serve as executive producers, along with James Marshall, Mike Tollin, Brian Robbins and Joe Davola. The series is produced by Tollin/Robbins Productions, Millar/Gough Ink and Warner Bros. Television. SUPERMAN was created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster.

ETA: News about which cast members could be returning, from TV Guide:

Smallville Renewed for Season 10
Mar 4, 2010 06:08 PM ET
by Natalie Abrams

Kneel before Zod!

Smallville has been renewed for a 10th season, the CW network announced Thursday.

The nascent Superman story starring Tom Welling was moved to Friday nights this season, leaving fans worried about the series' fate. The ratings have grown, though, bringing in an average of 3.12 million viewers.

When we last spoke with Erica Durance, she relayed that her contract ran through Season 10. Justin Hartley also said he would return if they want him back and a rep for the series said that Welling will be back. Also, Cassidy Freeman told TVGuide.com that her contract runs three years, meaning she could be included in Season 10. The big remaining question is: Will Allison Mack sign on for Season 10?

Well, I'm at work, so I had to control myself, but believe me, I'm screaming and jumping up and down on the inside. :D

I never realized how badly I wanted this until I read the good news. YAY!!

I'm a little surprised they didn't announce that season 10 is going to officially be the final one, but maybe they're saving that news for after the season 9 finale airs. So they don't give anyway anything about what they may be planing for next season.

That said, I never really doubted season 10 would happen. There were too many signs that it would. Nice to finally get the conformation that it is thought. :)

I hope they do announce that S10 is the last. I want them to go out with a bang, and bring this story to a proper end.

I confess, I was worried. I've never been more glad to be wrong!

Uh, is it completely unladylike for me to say...

SUCK IT HATERS!?

Sorry, that wasn't classy, LOL

As you know, I have my reservations and doubts, but I do love that our show is just too strong to say die. And it found a way to carve out a niche for itself on fridays, and that rocks.

And one more year of beautiful Tom. *sigh*

Classy or not, I agree, 100%! :D

I have a few doubts myself. ;) But I couldn't be happier that Smallville is coming back! Yay!!

And yes, one more year of beautiful Tom on my TV screen, week after week. *sighs with you* Even better, one more year of celebrating him with you! *twirls*

Yes, you were right to have faith! :D I'm so happy S10 has now been confirmed!

Greg Beeman!! I don't even have the words!!

I was just checking out the spoiler page at K-Site. I'm happy for Justin, I know writing is his passion (perhaps like directing is for Tom). And now that I know the show will go on, I can't wait to see what the rest of the season brings.

I'm definitely happy about another season of Tom on my TV!!!

*whispers*I'm kind of hoping that AM doesn't re-sign.*whispers*

This news made me very, very happy today. Maybe you noticed. ;)

Allison is definitely a gifted actress, and has been an amazing part of the show, but I feel like the writers don't know what to do with Chloe any more. I would not be disappointed if this season were her last.

Woohoo! And I LOVE the news of Greg Beeman returning to the show - he did some fantastic work in the early seasons.

Is it bad of me to say I don't want to know about the state of Allison's negotiations? It would give away too much about the way the season will play out IMO.
tariel22 From: tariel22 Date: March 5th, 2010 03:33 am (UTC) (Link)
I LOVE Greg Beeman! And he loves Tom! What an inspired choice to direct the season finale. Sometimes this show gets it so RIGHT.

I hope they don't confirm who is returning and who isn't until the season is over. Except for Tom and Erica, having a contract doesn't really guarantee anything, and I want to be surprised. As much as I can be while still being a complete spoiler whore, anyway. ;)

YES!!!! I'm SO EXCITED to see another season of our man! Woot!
T, I LOVE your clapping icon! Adorable!
I noticed they mention the ratings for men and adults. Are they forgetting the woman? Am I missing something here?
tariel22 From: tariel22 Date: March 5th, 2010 04:48 am (UTC) (Link)
YAY!!! I'm over the moon, Deb!! Another year of Tom on my TV screen, another year of squeeing over him with you, another year of your amazing Tommy art!

Isn't that icon just perfect for this news? :) I love it to pieces. I got it at j_in_the_gifs.

I think they don't mention the women ratings because they're not all that impressive compared to the men. Still, I read an interview with DO today where the interviewer asked if the CW was branching out from their desired 18-34 female demo (in response to the news of the Nomads pilot, with Scott Porter), and she basically said, no, we still don't like or want men. Well, that's how I interpreted her answer, anyway. ;)

Whewww, nice to get confirmation about season 10. Another year of Tommy on my tv screen!! Excited to hear Beeman is back too!! I agree with your regarding not hearing about who is returning next season(how nice is that to type)until after the season finale.
tariel22 From: tariel22 Date: March 5th, 2010 04:58 am (UTC) (Link)
I am so indescribably happy and relieved to hear this news!! It's very cool to think that Smallville will have a full decade of episodes, that is just amazing. Did Tom ever imagine back in the beginning that he would play Clark Kent for ten years?

Bringing Greg Beeman back is truly a dream come true for me. I hoped for it when he left Heroes, but then he went right over to MP. Even if it's just for this one episode, I will treasure every moment of it. I love him! Plus he's great friends with Michael, maybe he'll put in a good word. ;)
starry_dawn From: starry_dawn Date: March 5th, 2010 05:58 am (UTC) (Link)
I didn't really expect the show to NOT get renewed, so this doesn't come as a surprise. I'm really hoping they announce that this is the last season, though, because I want to know that the writers are thinking along those lines. It's just worrisome knowing that they're keeping that door open. :/

As for AM resigning, I don't know what to think. I think no matter what they do with Chloe, I will still always have that soft corner in my heart for her. She was the reason I stuck with the show for so long, and while that has changed now, I still think I'll feel very bad if Allison doesn't stick around for the last season. Then again, I don't know what the writers will do with Chloe for another season, and whether or not they'll keep her alive at the end of it, so I really don't know. :(
tariel22 From: tariel22 Date: March 5th, 2010 09:23 am (UTC) (Link)
I didn't have your confidence, maybe because I wanted it so badly. I totally agree that this MUST be the last season, and treated as such from the get-go. We heard that rumor that they want to go out with a bang, I hope it was true.

I think you know how much I've adored Chloe on this show. I recently re-watched all of S5 with a group of online friends, and I mourn for that Chloe, and her relationship with Clark. If I thought we could have that Chloe back, I'd be actively campaigning for her return. Allison is an incredible actress, and I can't begin to express my appreciation for all she has brought to the show over the years. But I don't think they know what to do with Chloe these days.

Signing Allison for another season would be expensive, and rightfully so, she deserves every penny. This may sound cold, but I don't want to see the show spend a big chunk of their resources on AM so Chloe can be in five minutes per episode and snipe at Clark the whole time. I'd rather remember her the way she used to be. :( I don't want them to kill her off, though. Chloe is unique to Smallville, a creation of AlMiles' imagination and Allison's sparkling personality and considerable acting talents, and I want to see her live on.

To be perfectly honest, the only character I can't live without is Clark. He IS the show for me.

Another year of Tommy in front of the cameras makes me a happy fangirl! :)

I'd love to see Michael return, but only if that's what he wants, of course.
goodvibe From: goodvibe Date: March 5th, 2010 03:29 pm (UTC) (Link)
This is undoubtedly momentous. I cannot help but be proud of SV. They consistently prove their naysayers wrong, ratings wise - and I say good for them. Of course, storytelling wise, I'm all sorts of weary, and I think the producers have ::got:: to realize that this.is.IT. But I think if ever there was a time to be truly proud of the shows place or potential place in contemporary television pop culture consciousness, this is it.
tariel22 From: tariel22 Date: March 7th, 2010 02:16 am (UTC) (Link)
Maybe I'm letting my optimism fly a little too freely, but this trailer gives me hope that the show really can pull together a kickass final arc for our boy. If they acknowledge it's the last season and just go for it, I think it could be glorious.

I'm tremendously proud that Smallville will have a full decade of seasons. I know some people live to hate this show, and it drives even me crazy on occasion, but it has brought me more joy than I can say over the years, and I love it beyond all reason. And Tom deserves the lion's share of the accolades, IMO. Not to discount the contributions of all the many, many people who come together to make the magic, but I believe it is Tom's characterization of Clark Kent that makes Smallville the success it continues to be.
