Michael Rosenbaum returning to Smallville for S10?
From Ask Ausiello:

Question: Crazed fans like myself desperately need an update on Smallville’s renewal. How’s it looking? Any idea what the hold-up is? —Ryan
It’s looking really, really good. And the hold-up is due to boring stuff like contracts and money.

From Superman Homepage:

February 25, 2010: "Smallville" Season 10 - Yes or No?
Steve Younis on February 25, 2010 12:01am EST

The Superman Homepage received word that Brian Doherty, who was just this month promoted to svp, national sales, at The CW has revealed that the execs at The CW are excited about a 10th season for "Smallville", wanting to really "go out with a bang".

The word is that they're attempting to close a deal with Michael Rosenbaum to return as Lex Luthor, wanting to sign him up for at least 9 or 10 episodes.

Apparently an announcement will be made one way or the other very soon.

Thanks to @sv_awareness on Twitter for the heads up!

I can't even begin to express how much I want this to be true, but I'm not letting myself get excited. It's just a rumor. But Tom Welling and Michael Rosenbaum sharing my TV screen again? Clark Kent and Lex Luthor together once more? For a final, glorious, 10th season of Smallville that is planned from the beginning to be the last? OH. MY. GOD.

I just jumped out of my chair and did a happy twirl! Oh how I wish they're right and this happens!!

I'm a little afraid they would have to kill off half the current characters to free up the budget to pay him, but who cares? Michael!! Lex!!

I refuse to get my hopes up, though.

Yeah, right. They're through the roof already!

Please Michael. Just say YES!
When I read about it, some images popped up in my head about Clex and their first meeting after all this time. Awwwww

I don't know if there's any truth to the rumor, but if so, I hope they can work it out.

Can you imagine what it would mean to the fans to have a final season like this?

Once again, I'm afraid I'm going to be the discordant voice. The Clex was so badly handled and, more often than not, so painful to watch in later seasons that my expectations are not high, should MR return, particularly if he's in a long arc. I dread what they'll do to that relationship and I'm sure it'll end up reflecting badly on Clark. After all, the SV writers love their woobie villains and Lex was the champion of them all.

It's not my intention to rain on anyone's parade so, please, don't mind me. I'm a bit bitter today. lol

I understand your wariness, but I'm optimistic that it would be different now. It would be a planned final season, with no more stalling. Lex would truly be the villain of the story, no more ambiguity. I think they would have to give Michael at least an outline so he knows what he's getting into, and I trust him to only sign on if it sounds good. Clark is completely different now himself, and I have longed to see S9's Clark interact with Lex. And finally, I have to think Tom would have a voice in all this as well, and I trust his instincts.

But it's also very likely that it will never happen. :)

I don't wanna get my hopes up, but I've always felt that Smallville should go for a tenth (and final) season, and that Michael should be a big part of it.
*crosses fingers*

I think it would be a wonderful way to bring the series to a close. Let it finish as it began, with Clark and Lex at the center.

It had occured to me that securing MR is the one contract hold-up I could see delaying a S10 announcement. The only other financial delay that made sense to me was, possibly, the CW wanting to cut the budget, and frankly, I don't see how SV could do that.

But it makes sense, IF they are trying to secure MR, that they would't announce anything until he's secured, or the deal fell through completely.
tariel22 From: tariel22 Date: February 25th, 2010 01:12 pm (UTC) (Link)
That makes a lot of sense. Now I'm fantasizing about Tom and Michael doing lunch to discuss the possibilities. :) And Michael and Cassidy acting opposite one another!

That's what I'm trying to do, too, but I'm failing miserably. I hope we get definitive news before I end up making a fool of myself, or even worse, set myself up for disappointment over something that was never in the cards in the first place.

I hope there is truth to these rumours!! *fingerscrossed*
It does explain the hold up in news of a 10th season.

It does seem to fit, but I suppose the false rumors that catch fire always do. I really do think it would be wonderful!

Do not forget Lex playing with Tess (if she makes it past this season).

It would be great, and I'm crossing my fingers, but I'm not holding out hope. I think MR likes having hair again too much.
tariel22 From: tariel22 Date: February 25th, 2010 08:05 pm (UTC) (Link)
Lex and Tess together would be so awesome! I really do hope they bring her back next season (if there is a next season), regardless of whether Michael returns or not. Cassidy is just too good to let go.

I'm all for them saying Lex's legions of scientists finally came up with a cure for baldness. Just make it happen, show! :)

I don't think you're raining on anyone's parade, I'm happy to hear all perspectives on this possibility. And I agree with all your stipulations whole-heartedly!

You're right that Lex has been mishandled in the past, especially during the last two seasons he was on the show, so how he would be reintroduced is critical. But I can't imagine Michael coming back just for the paycheck. I think they would have to pitch him a good story to convince him to return, and I think his instincts about Lex are spot on. I also trust Tom, and I think he would have a voice as well.

I'm actually quite curious about how they would handle Lex Luthor in this new and improved Smallville that we've been lucky enough to get. Clark, and by extension the show, have grown up so much - I think it could be really, really epic.

I've thought about Lex a lot as we've seen Clark change over the past two seasons, and wondered how the dynamic between them would change as well. Epic is exactly what I'm hoping for.

And the Clex could be AMAZING.

Let me party-poop too. :) I don´t want people to come back just for the sake of it. Can Lex contribute anything to Clark´s story? Or was his story finished in S7? Would he help Clark´s story or would he rather detract from it? Smallivlle has moved on and I am inclined to accept that things have changed. Leave it at that. No nostalgia for nostalgia´s sake. Finally, I feel that way too many guest stars and, more recently, DC characters have taken the focus off Clark rather than really helping him. So I am afraid the same is going to happen when MR is back. Lex will be at the center of fan attention, and Clark is again an afterthought... :( I admit that there were nice Clex scenes in the earlier seasons, but this time won´t come back just by bringing Lex back.
tariel22 From: tariel22 Date: February 25th, 2010 11:38 pm (UTC) (Link)
You make a lot of good points, and I agree that I would never want Lex to return for the sake of fandom hype and the promotional possibilities. But Clark is mere steps away from becoming Superman, and there is no Supes without Lex Luthor in my mind. They are inextricably intertwined, and I don't believe Lex's story could overpower Clark's because they are one and the same. I'm excited about the possibility of finally seeing Clark and Lex in their iconic roles, with no more debate about whether Lex is or isn't the villain of the story, and I think that's what we would get.

Tom and Michael have always had incredible chemistry, onscreen and off, and I think Michael's energy back on set, under the new leadership that includes Tom as a producer, could give us something truly amazing to watch. And Tom might even have more fun at work. :) I will admit I'm a huge Michael fan, but I'm an even bigger Tom/Clark fan. I think this would be good for both of them.

So said the incurable Smallville optimist. ;)

Part of my frustration with SV being extended for as long as it has is that it meant losing MR. Lex's downfall was such a major part of the show. Not to mention all the friendship of legend promotion. I would be thrilled if they could convince Michael to return for the finale even, let alone for ten episodes :D

I won't get my hopes up too high because I believe there was similar spec for season 8, and it ultimately never wnt anywhere, but keeping my fingers crossed that they can get him for the finale episode

I would be thrilled to have Michael back in any capacity, be it one episode or ten. I don't think the show is crippled by his absence or anything, but it would be awesome to come full circle and return to the relationship that was the focus of this show when it started.

My two cents? I love Michael; I love Lex.

But I don't trust the current writers to do his character justice. Three great actors playing Davis, Tess and Zod - three completely incoherent storylines.

The show has successfully branched into comedy with the Bryan Miller episodes. But there is still no ability to write a decent plot arc. I fear Michael will return and his Lex will be wasted.
tariel22 From: tariel22 Date: February 26th, 2010 05:57 pm (UTC) (Link)
If I'm going to look at this rumor realistically, there isn't anything to indicate it's any different from the quotes we've seen from Brian and Kelly in the past, and we know there's a world of difference between how they've always represented the possibility of Michael returning, and what Michael himself says. I wouldn't be surprised if they leaked this rumor in the hopes of creating a groundswell of fan reaction that will help convince Michael to consider their offer. And if Michael's position hasn't changed, I feel bad that his appearance at the charity hockey game this weekend will now be overshadowed by this, with him spending the majority of his time deflecting questions, opinions, and advice about his possible return to Smallville.

Your take on this doesn't surprise me, of course, and I can hardly argue with your concerns. Truthfully, I share them. But I just want to see them together again so badly, and I can't help but hope that their combined creative talent, coupled with Tom's new position of power and influence on the show, will somehow compensate for other weaknesses. And no, I'm not delusional, I'm optimistic. :)
