Smallville: Erica Durance talks to Jenna Busch for AOL TV
In addition to Justin Hartley, Erica Durance is also making the rounds to promote the return of Smallville. This interview is with Jenna Busch for AOL Television. I love what Erica had to say when asked if she wants Lois to find out Clark's secret:

"I think that, being that the show is about Superman, in regards to Lois knowing or not knowing, whatever makes it easier for Clark's character. That's kind of how I feel. There's got to be somebody that is in his camp, that is supportive ... whether he tells the truth to her or not. Up until now, he's had a lot of characters that are like, 'Tell me the truth or I'm out of here.' And that's the one thing that Lois doesn't want to be."

The entire interview follows:

Erica Durance Reports on 'Smallville' New Episodes
January 28, 2010
By: Jenna Busch

'Smallville' returns tomorrow night at 8PM ET on The CW, and no doubt fans will be glued to their couches for both the new episode and next week's highly-anticipated two-hour movie, 'Absolute Justice.'

The 'Smallville' online community has been buzzing about pictures of Michael Shanks as Hawkman and deciphering the trailer for hints about which other Justice Society of America members we might see. Fans probably also have seen the now famous picture of Lois Lane herself, Erica Durance in a certain red and blue costume.

About the costume, Durance told AOL TV, "It is 'Amazon Princess'. It's another of Lois' things that's her fault. She wasn't trying to be Wonder Woman," she laughed. "She thought she was an Amazon Princess!" Oh, and those two episodes she won't be on? She's not telling!

AOL TV got the scoop from the intrepid reporter about upcoming episodes, working with guest star Pam Grier and whether or not she wants Lois to learn Clark's secret.

You keep getting kidnapped. And from what I hear, it's happening again in 'Disciple'. What can you tell us about your role in the episode?
'Disciple' is not a kidnapping, per se. I think it's just part of being in Smallville. You will experience kidnappings, you will experience getting hit on the head, shot, stabbed, whatever it is, it will happen. But you will live. So in 'Disciple' Lois actually gets shot by Oliver [Justin Hartley]. And because of the thing that he went through earlier in the season, where you see he's really struggling, you think that he really thinks that he still loves her, she thinks that, OK, perhaps he's gone over the edge and he's just jealous because of her relationship with Clark. And then you see, of course, as the episode goes further on, there's all sorts of other stuff going on. But yes, at the beginning, she actually gets shot with an arrow, which is a new thing for Lois.

I also heard you get a mysterious package from Checkmate in "Absolute Justice'. So, do you actually have any scenes with Pam Grier, who plays Amanda Waller?
Yes. I do. And they've introduced the fact that Amanda Waller has found Lois out of everyone because of how tenacious she is as a journalist. And says that she will be in contact with her. So I get the pleasure of being part of that storyline and then, as an actress, I get to work with Pam Grier, which was awesome.

What was it like working with Pam?
You know, she's been around for a long time and she knows her thing. She just carries this great energy with her. She's gracious, she's just so seasoned. She knows what she's doing. It was intimidating at first, because, this is Pam Grier I'm acting with. But she just made me feel really comfortable and she was great.

You worked with Michael Shanks on 'Stargate SG-1.' Do you have any scenes together in 'Absolute Justice'?
I got to see him as we were walking to our different trailers [laughs]. The whole 'Absolute Justice' thing that they came up with, the whole two-hour event, it was really fun to be a part of. I think the fans will be really excited with all the introductions of these great superheroes. And the whole point of it, really, is to continue on with this great storyline that they're doing, but also to show that other side of Clark [Tom Welling] and give them that window into learning more about him and his heroic side. And he gets to learn more about it. And I think that will help his character evolve.

I had also read that you were a fan of Lois Lane before you were cast. Is there a character you'd like to see on the show?
There have been some comments about having Perry White [Michael McKean] come in ... That would be very very exciting for me. [Note: McKean's guest stint has been confirmed.]

What do you want to see happen with him? Do you want to see him move her up at the Daily Planet? Get a byline?
I'm always excited to see what the writers come up with. They're always giving me something that surprises me. I just hope that it proceeds in a way that is true to form with what they've been doing with me for the last six years.

I've been asked to ask you this by many fans. I hear there is a bed and breakfast scene with Clark and Lois. So, will there be a Clois sex scene?
You'll just have to watch. [Laughs] It's a bed & breakfast. It's not specifically about. ... just watch it. Be patient [laughs].

What is it like being directed by your cast mates Tom Welling and Allison Mack?
Allison directed me for the first time this year and there's something about working with people who are a part of your show or that have worked with you as an actor. They understand how you work. They have that same investment in the show and the end product.

Everyone has been reading that Lois becomes a bit of a happy homemaker in the episode 'Persuasion.' Is there anything that you can tell us about that episode?
Whether Lois has had any kind of persuasion or not, she tends to be somebody that does everything in full color. So now that she's been enhanced with that, and in this one, Clark accidentally is saying that he wants them to be more traditional...she zeroes in on what her idea of traditional is, and what would Clark like most. And who's the only example of a real female matriarch in his life, is Martha [Annette O'Toole] and I think she just goes full tilt to be that for him. And decides that, traditionally, they should be married and live together and there's all sorts of fun that happens [laughs].

What do you want to see for Lois in the rest of this season and hopefully the next one?
You know, I've kind of taken the stance that I have pipe dreams, but I also really keep it open, because the writers have given me a lot. And it's always different and it's always fun. Sometimes it's bizarre and sometimes it's really straight laced. So I've really been able to...I don't have complaints from this year. I just get to continue to evolve. And that's what they've done ... I see them continuing with that trajectory of going forward into the mythology, which would be wonderful for me. But I've never sat around and gone, I want them to do this or that, because they keep opening these great avenues for me.

People really want to know your opinion on whether or not Lois ever learns Clark's secret before the series comes to an end.
That's kind of one of those existential questions. Does she ever know? Does she know deep down? Who knows? I ask myself that all the time. I don't know what they have planned for me...

Do you want her to find out?
I don't know. Maybe she already does on some level. I like the secret. It keeps it interesting. I'll say this though. I think that, being that the show is about Superman, in regards to Lois knowing or not knowing, whatever makes it easier for Clark's character. That's kind of how I feel. There's got to be somebody that is in his camp, that is supportive ... whether he tells the truth to her or not. Up until now, he's had a lot of characters that are like, 'Tell me the truth or I'm out of here.' And that's the one thing that Lois doesn't want to be.

In other news, here's another trailer for Absolute Justice, courtesy of The Ausiello Files. It's pretty awesome, but I still like the Canadian one better. :)

I agree! As a Clark fan first and foremost, it's what I want most for him from Lois: unconditional love and acceptance. And I appreciate how Erica is always thinking about Clark. She always seems to bring him into her interviews, even when the question is about something else entirely.

Erica really does have a good grasp on what makes her character so much more appealing (to me at least) than Lana - because she has a better sense of balance, as demonstrated by her attitude towards Clark's secret. Can't wait for next week! Here's hoping all the Ollie tomorrow doesn't equal the massive suckage that was Toxic and Roulette.

I think Erica has thought a lot about who Lois is, and while she's up for whatever storylines the writers develop for her, she works hard to stay true to her own vision of Lois as well. I find Lois infinitely more appealing than Lana, and it sounds like if Erica gets her way, that won't change.

While I love watching Tom in passionate scenes as much as the next fangirl (especially if he manages to lose his shirt in the process), what I enjoy more than the romance between Clark and Lois is the friendship that is the foundation for it. That's something I think we rarely got to see between Clark and Lana, especially after the first couple of seasons.

I'm thrilled that Smallville will be back tomorrow night with a new episode, but it's nothing compared to my anticipation for Absolute Justice. Every new interview and promo just whets my appetite more!

Thanks for posting this interview! I enjoyed it although I felt like a lot was said without any actual information being shared, you know?

I wish Erica had mentioned what it was like being directed by Tom instead of just answering about Allison. She's probably so tired of that question though!

I definitely liked her answer about her wanting Lois to do whatever is best for Clark though! :-)

Erica's really good at playing her cards close to her vest, isn't she? Justin was much more forthcoming. I think a little mystery is good, but I'm really curious to know which episodes she isn't in.

I was thinking she talked about Allison because that experience was new to her, while she's been directed by Tom several times before. As you know, though, I'm always hopeful for a quote about Tom, since we never get any from him! ;)

I hope the writers share her ideas about Lois. I love how the relationship has been relatively angst free, and I'd like it to stay that way.

Erica's interviews normally don't leave me thinking that, but this one certainly did. I actually found it a little weird in that way. I figure she was told not to say which episodes she's in to encourage people to tune in to all of them. I remember the way Lois was in the trailers for episodes during the Lana arc last season, when the character was absolutely nowhere to be found.

That part you quoted first was the highlight of the interview for me, for sure. I love Erica's views on Lois, and I really appreciate the way she always seems to come back to Clark in her interviews.

I'm also thoroughly intrigued by "Persuasion" and I can't wait to see Clark's reaction to Lois's attempts to emulate Mama Kent. That should be fun.

I think you're right. I get the impression that Erica was briefed by TPTB about what she should and shouldn't reveal. I think the Clois spoilers create a lot of buzz, so they tend to control how they're revealed a little bit more, and maybe save them for Ausiello. And Clark spoilers are even more rare! :)

It's funny, the IGN interviewer said that Justin spoiled so much he decided to hold some of it back, thinking the fans would rather be surprised about certain things.

I love Erica's views on Lois, and I really appreciate the way she always seems to come back to Clark in her interviews.

Me, too. I love how thoughtful and introspective Erica is when she talks about her character. You can tell how much she enjoys portraying Lois, and how important it is to her to do right by her. Not only that, she thinks about her character's partner, and how he is affected by everything going on around him, the same way you might think about your own boyfriend in RL. That's pretty cool. I appreciate so much that she doesn't just show up, hit her marks, and say her lines.

Persuasion does sound fun! Tom and Erica both have a gift for comedy, and together they've given me some of my favorite moments of the entire series. I don't even want to tell you how many times I've watched the Crossfire teaser! :)

The one thing I have always appreciated about Lois is that she lets Clark be. She doesn't feel the need to question, or investigate, or demand answers and explanations. She just accepts, and offers a respite, first with her friendship, and now with her love. Obviously Erica understands how important that kind of support is to Clark, and she portrays it so well, along with the unique spirit that makes Lois who she is, and that captivates Clark.

I'm looking forward to the rest of the season; a lot of the spoilers I've seen are intriguing. I just hope we find out if we'll have a tenth season soon.

I love Erica!! Other than AoT, she is the actor on the show I think loves being on the show the most. She is always very respectful of the character, the show and the fans. *kisses, ED!!!*

Am I the only person that finds the mythology, "BIG" eps, as my least favorite?? I think I only watched "Legion" once. I find whenever they bring in the DC Universe, the writers take the focus off Clark. And I like my show to be about Clark. Just my opinion. I hope this one doesn't disappoint.

Erica is such a trooper. She's enthusiastic, positive, and she's always happy to promote the show. Plus she just seems like a lot of fun.

I'm actually hoping that Absolute Justice will put the focus back on Clark. If the episode is anything like the promos, it's going to be the most Clark-centric story we've seen in a while.

I really like what ED says about Lois and the issue of Clark's secret. I totally share her opinion, of course, and can only hope the writers do too. Also, I'm glad she clearly sees and respects that Clark is the center of the show and that should never be forgotten!

Thanks, once again, for the great info!

I have to admit, this interview made me like Erica even more. She consistently brings Clark into the discussion when she talks about the show, and what she said about Clark here is near and dear to my heart. He does need someone who will trust him and believe in him, without any strings or conditions. I hope the writers will allow Lois to continue to be that person.

Thanks for commenting! ♥

I'm running out of holidays to add to my metaphor.

Birthday, Christmas, Easter and St. Patrick's Day?
