Smallville: Who is in the JSA painting in Absolute Justice?
I don't know if anyone else is curious about this, but I was. Comic book artist Rodolfo Migliari created the fabulous painting we see in the trailer for Absolute Justice. He said on his blog that "the idea for the painting was to do [a] combination between Leonardo Da Vinci's 'Last Supper' and the cover from All Star Comics #3." He also identified all the superheroes he included.

Below, L to R: The Golden Age Star Spangled Kid, Wildcat, The Golden Age Atom, and The Golden Age Sandman.

Below, L to R: The Spectre, The Golden Age Flash, Hawkman, and Hawkgirl. To the right of Hawkgirl, but not featured in any of the close-up shots in the trailer: Doctor Fate and The Golden Age Green Lantern.

Below, L to R: The Golden Age Hourman, The Golden Age Dr. Mid-Nite, The Golden Age Black Canary, and The Golden Age Mr. Terrific.

Just for fun, here are a few more of my favorite caps from the trailer:

And one more, a little bigger, just because he's so damn gorgeous! :)

Credit to The Source for the trailer, and thanks again to SHoE for the download. I made the caps.

I think the painting is a very cool piece, and I love that Smallville commissioned it especially for this 2-hour movie. All the artifacts that Clark finds in the former headquarters of the JSA look awesome. It really looks like the show has given Absolute Justice the care (and the budget) to make it into a true event. Mark your calendars, two weeks from today!

ETA: Rodolfo Migliari was true to his word, and posted a gorgeous scan of the painting once Absolute Justice had aired. Click on the thumbnail for full size:

That painting totally blows me away! I almost cried when I saw all the wonderful close-ups in the trailer. Can't wait!

The painting is amazing! I've been wanting to see it in greater detail ever since we had our first peek of it a couple of months ago, and up close it's glorious! That entire trailer is made of WIN. If the episode is anything like it, it's going to be two hours of heaven for me.

Wow, that is so cool! Thanks for sharing the close ups.

The painting really is gorgeous, isn't it? SHoE posted a download of the trailer on their site, and I can't get enough of watching it, sometimes frame by frame! :) I love how the whole thing is shown through Clark's eyes, this incredible moment of discovery. I was surprised at how emotional my reaction was. I can't wait to see the whole movie!

I think the painting is beautiful, but I can't help but notice how very close to the Watchman picture it is. It seems to me that the movie had a lot of influence on AJ.

Just please be Clark-centric. Thats all I ask.

Is that right? I never saw Watchmen, so any similarities will go right over my head. I wouldn't be surprised if that's what inspired the writers to commission the painting (it wouldn't be the first time we saw elements from a film in the show), but the piece itself really does evoke the source material the artist cites, it's a perfect blend of the two.

Just please be Clark-centric. Thats all I ask.

Yes! That's what I want as well. And if this trailer reflects what we can expect from Absolute Justice as a whole, I will be a happy fangirl.

Thanks so much for the info! Isn't it a wonderful trailer? It felt to me that for once in years there's no secondary character to steal from Clark what is rightfully his. I hope the movie will live up to expectations!

I loved how this trailer was all about Clark: his sense of wonder at this organization he never dreamed existed, and the inspiration its members will give him. I can't wait to see what else this movie holds in store!

It's wild that the painting touches me on so many levels as a comic book fan. To see the generational connectivity of the heroes present and past is so great.

Even as someone who is pretty much new to comic books (I read Supes comic books as a kid, but only started reading in earnest right before Legion aired), this is the aspect that resonates with me as well. And I love the way Geoff Johns writes Superman, so I have high hopes for Clark in Absolute Justice.

Everything you said! This is the show I want to be watching! I'm in such a happy place as a Smallville fan right now, it really is a wonderful feeling.

I'm getting so excited and I know almost nothing about it. You and ophelia77 have corrupted me completely!

Resistance is futile! \o/

Besides, why would you want to? There's all that pretty!

That table Clark uncovers instantly made me think of King Arthur, too. :)

I'm not a huge comics person either, but I love how all those iconic elements are there for the fans who are. This is an event that can appeal to the hardcore fans, the casual fans, and even comic book fans who normally don't watch Smallville. I'm sure I won't get all of the references in the movie, but just like in Legion, I don't think missing them will diminish the story for me in any way. It will just be that much richer for those who are steeped in the JSA mythos.

Tom looks both beautiful and heroic in the trailer. I swear, he embodies Superman in his bearing alone! I can't wait to hear him say the words that Geoff Johns has written, especially in those scenes he directed himself.

Cool! I love the attention the set people on SV pay to details!

I love all the artifacts and costumes and everything else that gives the show that feel of being a comic book come to life, and this episode has more of that than any before it. I also like the way they make it all their own, giving everything that special twist that makes it uniquely Smallville.

Oh, I never noticed Black Canary in the painting when I caught the trailer. Of course now, I'm curious whether a mention will be made about that in regards to our present day Black Canary.

I'm seriously looking forward to this episode, and hoping it'll be Clarkie and the JSA centric, with minimal Chloe and plenty of Lois in the second half. :)
tariel22 From: tariel22 Date: January 25th, 2010 09:35 am (UTC) (Link)
I was wondering about that, too. Geoff Johns did such a great job of integrating the Legion into the Smallville world we know so well, and I can't wait to see how he works the same magic with the JSA.

This seems to be a story where all the good guys will have a significant part to play, and I'm excited about that, but like you, I hope that ultimately the story revolves around Clark, and that he will have lots of time onscreen. Especially in the second half, because I always love Tom's Clark best when he directs himself.

Wow that's cool. Wish we had a real photo of the whole painting. Thanks for posting these T! :)

The artist said he might be able to post an image of the painting once the episode airs, so I'll be checking his blog to see if that happens. I'd love it if the show released a hi-res image with the promo pics (there had better be promo pics!).

The painting is lovely - I wonder who will get to keep it. (Maybe Tom will sneak it home!) I was curious about the gentleman with the cat ears - thought he might be Catman, who was featured in a JL episode. Haven't heard of Wildcat before.

Looking forward to Clark meeting all these heroes! (Are they using Lex's manor as the JSA headquarters? That room looks awfully familiar...)
tariel22 From: tariel22 Date: January 25th, 2010 09:52 am (UTC) (Link)
I was wondering if that is indeed the original we see in the episode, or if it's a copy, and the artist kept the actual painting. Or maybe the original will decorate the WB offices in L.A. I've seen a lot of fanboys clamoring for a copy they can buy!

I think that is the mansion set, good eye! It has a very familiar feel to it, especially in that first scene.

Thank you for posting the trailer caps and the details about who is in the painting :D It is great to see the close up shots.
Speaking of the trailer, I love that it is Clark and his wonderment at his discoveries. When will it be February 5th???? Waiting but not patiently ;)
Couldn't leave without commenting on the lovely cap of Tom *sigh*, so beautiful!

Everything about the trailer makes me excited to see this episode! I, too, love that we see this discovery through Clark's eyes in the trailer. I so want Absolute Justice to be his story!

I'm especially looking forward to seeing what choices Tom makes as the director in the second half. So much has changed in the relationships between all the characters since he last directed the show, and I'm still a little confused about where everyone stands. I'm curious to see if Tom's direction will afford any new insight.

I saw the Watchmen parallels but I love how the painting incorporates the elements from the comic book cover and "The last Supper". I also love just how DEAD ON the wardrobe got the costumes. Hawkgirl's helmet looks alien and sleek and aerodynamic. The Green lantern (it's the Alan Scott version I'm guessing )looks just like it does in the comics. I'm geeking out over here!
tariel22 From: tariel22 Date: January 27th, 2010 12:37 am (UTC) (Link)
I love how the artist shared his inspiration, and when you look at those two sources, you can see how perfectly he blended the two concepts. I thought that was very cool.

It's so great that you don't have to be a big comic book fan to understand and enjoy this movie, but if you are, you'll appreciate it on a whole other level. Legion was wonderful that way.
