This week's episode revolved around the big Founder's Party, and it had all the elements that make any party a success: gossip, scandal, family secrets, fascinating personalities, drinking, dancing, and a shocking surprise ending. We learned some new details from the brothers' past, saw the conflict between them taken to a whole new level, and discovered that the Salvatores aren't the only ones in Mystic Falls with memories that stretch far into the past. This story just keeps getting better, and I'm on the edge of my seat, waiting to see what happens next!
The party was a great way to introduce us to all we've been missing about Mystic Falls. We finally met the movers and shakers of this town, the adults I assumed had no part to play in this world of pretty teenagers and angsty young love. But here they were, and they brought plenty of history and baggage with them. The mayor has always been a Lockwood, and the sheriff has always been a Forbes. Along with the Fell family, they've been around as long as the Salvatores have, and OMG, they have some kind of secret society ready to stake up and hunt the bloodsuckers down! This is getting GOOD.
Were the Gilberts in on this with them, since their heirloom watch seems to have a pivotal role to play? Is it Jeremy's destiny to take up the fight? Are Stefan and Elena actually Romeo and Juliet, and even more romantically tragic than we first imagined? Where does Bonnie's family fit in? As her powers grow and manifest more each day, will she become her BFF's boyfriend's most powerful ally, or his most formidable foe? And what's up with that crystal? I have countless questions, and that makes me happy. There is plenty to anticipate and explore in the weeks ahead.
Damon was in fine form this week, reveling in the games he was playing, and completely confident that he had the upper hand. He fancied himself the puppet master, his only consideration in crafting his next move his own amusement. Even though he is undoubtedly the villain of this story, I still love him best. Each week he seems a little more dangerous, a little bit closer to losing control, but if I'm being honest, I'm secretly egging him on. Don't get me wrong, I like Stefan and Elena, but I like the thrill of being scared by Damon even more. :)
Damon's mistreatment of Caroline continued, and it was so creepy to watch him casually promise to kill her while he kissed her, and then have her smile in return. I don't know where Caroline's own will ended and the glamouring began, but everything about their relationship was twisted and wrong. And yet you could tell she touched Damon in some small way. He still tried to kill her in the end, but he did hesitate and seem to face some inner struggle before he took that final bite. Wasn't that scene awesome? In one moment I'm freaking out because I think Damon has killed Caroline, and in the next I'm stunned to realize the brilliance of Stefan's plan. The tables are turned, and Damon is locked safely away in Zach's cellar! But don't write your happy ending just yet. You KNOW he's going to escape, and there's going to be hell to pay when he does. *shivers*
Stefan and Elena are adorable, and irresistible. I want things to work out for them, although the obstacles they face seem insurmountable. Even a little bit of passion between them threatens Stefan's control, and Damon easily orchestrated their first quarrel. But Stefan is fighting hard for their happiness, and Elena was quick to make up when she saw proof of Damon's true nature. Together I think they can face anything. I have high hopes.
I'm still not feeling it for Jeremy and his sullen, bad boy ways, and Tyler and Vicki as the rich boy with the snooty parents and the trashy girlfriend who embarrasses him is such a cliche. Zzzz. I couldn't care less about that triangle. And the only thing that interests me about Jenna and Logan is that he evidently has no conscience, and is willing to win her back just so he can betray her again. But I've already seen how this show can turn on a dime and surprise me, so I'm certainly not writing off any storylines yet.
Random thoughts: Damon reading the Twilight books is too funny. Older sexy danger guy? I need an icon of that! :) More lovely shirtless scenes this week. Yum. Damon and Stefan were lucky they were so conveniently invited in at the party, that could have been awkward. And the music was again awesome this week, it is one of the show's greatest strengths.
This show is doing a great job of building the eerie world of Mystic Falls for us. Each episode adds interesting layers and unexpected developments, and gives us new clues to the mysteries to be solved as this story unfolds. But it is still Ian Somerhalder's performance as Damon that seals the deal for me. He has exceeded all my expectations, and single-handedly made The Vampire Diaries a show that is not to be missed.
Damon had the BEST lines in this episode! My favorites:
"Football reference! Too soon?"
"Some girls just can't resist my good looks, my style and my charm, and my unflinching ability to listen to Taylor Swift."
"This is John Varvatos, dude. Dick move."
"No yellow. Jaundice. Go for the blue."
"What's so special about this Bella girl? Edward's so whipped!"
"I miss Anne Rice. She was so on it."
"You're dead, dude. Get over it."
"It's cool not growing old. I like being the eternal stud."
"I'm not some drunk sorority chick. You can't roofie me."
"I have to go to the party angry. Who knows what I'll do?"
