Such a fun episode! Well, except for Chloe - she was just so hateful. And I hate that she keeps stressing that it's Lois who Clark can't leave alone, when he was clearly telling her it was more than that. Anyways, I don't have enough energy to write more about her anymore, especially when there's so much else to talk about.

I loved Clark so much in this episode: how he THOUGHT and how he LISTENED and how he LEARNED. Up until the halfway mark, I think the episode was just somewhat above average, but Clark's 3 final scenes really changed that decisively. Like you, the scene with Lois at the end was my definite favorite - it was wonderful to see the sunshine and Clark smiling with (not at) Lois. I think another important realisation for him is seeing how happy Lois was at the chance to help the Blur, regardless of the risk it put her in. It's part of his growth that he has to let those around him live their lives and not try to wrap them up in cotton wool.

I agree, and Metallo has remained one of my favorite episodes of S9 for that reason. It gave me the sense that Clark is his own man now, who will listen to others, but no longer be unduly swayed by them. I think he finally realizes that he is truly unique among men, and that it is impossible for anyone else to fully appreciate what he faces everyday, much less decide or dictate what he should do.

I wonder if TPTB are afraid of this epiphany for Clark because it would remove the last remaining barrier to Clark revealing himself to Lois, and it seems they don't want to go there. I saw someone speculate that if the show gets a S10, they will have Clark tell Lois his secret as part of the 200th episode (episode 4 of S10). I think that's a great idea.
