There was a new thread at Kryptonsite that had an idea. Pick the episode that best encapsulates the entire season. So this is what I came up with.

S1 - Pilot, since this season was about establishing the characters and Pilot did that best

S2 - Rosetta, because this season was about establishing the Smallville version of the mythology. (Could also go with Skinwalker)

S3 - tough to choose but I'll say Shattered

S4 - I'd say Crusade since when I think of S4 I think of Lois, stones, witches and Clark flying - all of which started here

S5 - Reckoning kind of makes sense except Brainiac is such a major part of S5 to me so I have to pick an episode with him in it. So I think I'll go with Splinter, because we've got Brainiac scheming and Clark's paranoia about Lexana that seems absolutely prophetic by season end

S6 - Phantom cause there aren't many episodes that blend the three main threads of the season - Clexana, Phantoms and Lex's experiments (and two of the others are the horrific Wither and Static)

S7 - Traveler because it unites the major threads of Kara, Veritas, Lionel's ambiguous hero-villain status and Lex's descent

S8 - my problem with voting for Bride is what I like so much about it: it doesn't have very much Davis/Doomsday. And neither it nor Bloodline talk about the other major arc of the season - the rise of the RBB - so I can't dhoose either. So instead I'll choose Turbulence, an under-rated episode IMO.

That's a totally cool concept! I like the way you share your reasoning in arriving at the episodes you chose. It's true that a lot of episodes will touch on this arc or that arc, but not encompass all the important themes of the season. And your final list is a group of episodes that are all exceptional.

I think Turbulence is under-rated as well. The acting was really strong, and it was such an important turning point for so many characters! And in hindsight, it really set up how things would play out in the end.
