A little help?
Hey, I've never done anything like this before, but if I can't exploit my flist, why am I even here? :) I just decided I need to buy a digital camera (yeah, I can't believe I don't already have one, either). The construction crew next door is turning off all the power at 4:00 PM and kicking us out, so I figure I'll go straight to Best Buy from here. I have done absolutely no research, although I have a vague knowledge of the term "megapixels" and something everyone seems to rave about called "image stabilization." Does anyone have a recommendation of what camera to buy? I'm thinking of spending something between $200 and $300. Tell me what camera you have, and if you like it or not. You have two hours from right now to affect my buying decision (if you're even online at the moment)! Go!

ETA: This is the one I bought (the blue one)! It's wee, and beautiful, and I love it! And if I can figure out how to use it, I'll start posting pics someday soon, just like everyone else. Yay!!

I have a Kodak Easy Share C743. It's a 7.1 megapixel (makes for HUGE image files) and a 3x zoom. It's really simple to use as a point and shoot. I've never heard of "image stabilization" but I think that's the feature where it shows the shakey hand icon. I just got mine for my birthday in '06 and I love it. [info]angieb5 has a cool camera too, her's as a SUNSET SETTING! *gasp* It's an Olympus, but you'd need to ask her for the specifics. Not sure if this helps you or not, but I thought I'd throw it out there. *smishes*

That helps a lot, it's exactly the kind of feedback for which I was hoping. Easy point and shoot is just what I want. And if a sunset setting gets you pics like Angie's from her trip, I should definitely look into that! Thanks for the info!

I have a Canon PowerShot something. It's several years old and I think it's a 6 megapixel. I really like it for its small, compact size and large viewing screen on the back. It also doesn't have a long delay between snapping the picture and actually taking the picture, as some digital cameras do. I'd really recommend getting one with a rechargeable battery as opposed to one that uses AA batteries - I've had relatives that have cameras that use AA batteries and the batteries seem to drain pretty quickly.

We also helped my MIL buy a camera and I think she got a Casio...very similar to ours, but more user-friendly. It was recommended by the nice people at Best Buy. :D

Oh, great points! I do want something small, that I can stick in a pocket, and with a viewer big enough to really tell what the picture looks like. And I'll put rechargeable battery on the list. I just don't want to look like a complete idiot when I walk in. :) Thanks for your help!

Lithium ion batteries last a long time too, that's what I'm using now and I love not having to fuss with the rechargables. Though, they may be cost effective. Do they last a while? Does anyone know?

When I think of rechargeable, I think of the kind of battery that comes with the camera, which I guess is lithium ion? I've never tried rechargeable batteries in the traditional sizes like AA, I've only used the throwaway kind (although you and I can't throw them away anymore, since that's against the law in California now).

I didn't know that! OMG! I'm going to JAIL! *hides in the trunk of the Impala with all the shiny weapons*

Thank you! I've been trying to do better by the environment since I moved out on my own. I feel like I kicked a puppy or something.

LOL! I wouldn't put ignorance of the new hazardous waste rules in the same category as that! But I know what you mean. Not too long ago I ran a 400-page double-sided report, and then discovered after it printed that I had compiled the data incorrectly, so I had to recycle the whole thing and start over. I felt like a bad tree killer.

Wow, and I felt bad for throwing out a couple of batteries... you win! JK... it happens. It's not like either of us were trying to blatantly destroy the universe.

Alls I know is that I've got a Sanyo. Paid somewhere around $90 for it and it works wonderfully. I'm sure if I'd spent more money, I may have gotten one that takes the red eye out for you or that focuses on the faces, but mines does the job. Takes the pictures and they print out clearly. I love my cheap little camera LMAO.

Takes the pictures and they print out clearly.

And that's exactly what I need! :) It's not like I'll be doing anything fancy, I could never figure out how. I want to be able to post pics here, but I figure any camera can upload to Photobucket, so no worries about that. Thanks for the input!

I have an old clunker hand-me-down from my parents. I like Elphs as analog cameras, and I was thinking of getting a digital one for myself.

I googled that, and it sounds pretty good! It's small, in my price range, 8 MP and 3X zoom, with image stabilization and a bunch of presets. More importantly, it comes in colors!! LOL! That's two votes for Canon. I wish I could go to Buy More and have Chuck help me. *sighs*

Go Chuck!! \o/

Evidently pink is the hot color, but I'd probably go with the blue. They also come in silver, gold, and brown. I'm only telling you because you may be in the market for one yourself. :) They're very pretty. BTW, I'm talking about the Canon PowerShot SD1100 IS Digital ELPH.

I've got a Canon PowerShot SD 800, and I love it. It takes fabulous pictures even when I don't. It's not super compact, but enough to easily fit in my purse, or a pocket.

It sounds like people definitely like Canon. I think we have a winner! I love LJ! It makes being lazy so satisfying! LOL!
