Smallville: Tom Welling in TV Week
Canada's TV Week Magazine featured Smallville on the cover of their May 7-13, 2011 issue, and inside they talked with Tom Welling and other members of the cast (both past and present) about filming the show in Vancouver over the past ten years.

Most heartwarming quote from Tom:

If you go back and see some of the relationships that Clark has had with other people who are younger than him, he was always putting his hand on the person's shoulder to sort of comfort them or give them some fatherly or worldly advice. When John was [in Vancouver] for the finale, I made a point of saying, "I don't know if you know this, but it's a choice I've made for Clark to symbolize and show that Jonathan is very much a part of Clark's life.

Tom on Michael Rosenbaum:

I always thought Michael's take on Lex was really interesting. He said, "Who says Lex is the bad guy? Maybe Clark is the bad guy. Maybe Clark's the one screwing everything up, but no one's figured it out yet!" Michael had a lot of integrity with his character, a lot of moral statutes that he was adhering to.

Tom on Christopher Reeve:

I don't even know if you can really call Christopher Reeve just a guest star, because he was so much bigger than that. That was such a wonderful, inspiring, fantastic experience to be able to go to New York and be able to shoot with him. I couldn't even believe it. I was in shock the whole time.

Most intriguing quote from Tom:

I love the whole process of producing, directing, writing and acting. Through 10 years on Smallville, I've learned a little bit of each, and I want to take that, go forward and hopefully continue my career in all of those areas. I think I'll always be an actor first, but I love telling stories. I think you can tell stories and express emotion in all four disciplines. That's what I look for.

Tom wants to write?! I just love the way he expresses himself. All these recent interviews have been an incredible gift to his fans, and have gone a long way toward easing the pain of knowing that once Smallville is well and truly over, we're not likely to see him again for awhile.

There are also quotes from John Schneider, Annette O'Toole, John Glover, Justin Hartley, and Allison Mack. Clickable thumbnails of the entire article:

Wow what a GREAT article and quotes from Tom! I have to say I always loved how affectionate Jonathan was with Clark and it's so nice to hear that it was Tom choice to have Clark continue that as a reflection of Jonathan.

The writing quote is very interesting. I also had no idea Tom was interesting writing, but I do love how ambitious Tom is and his desire to learn and be involved in all aspects of the business. And it's a plus to to hear Tom say he's an actor first! We don't want to loose that beautiful man behind the camera!

Thanks so much for all the scans and quotes! It's another real treat from Tom to his fans. I have to say I'm thoroughly enjoy this time with Tom really being out there promoting the show. I hope he continues to promote himself and Hellcats after SV comes to and end on Friday. :)

This article was so much more than what I expected. I especially love the quotes from Tom. They're so thoughtful, and I was fascinated by what he said about his plans for the future. I'm overwhelmed by all that Tom has shared with us in the past couple of weeks, and I couldn't be more thankful.

Tom never fails to surprise me, and I think that's a big part of why I find him so captivating. I can't wait to see what he says or does next! :)

Oh, wow, this is so great! I wish I could get my hands on this issue but I'm really grateful to have people like you who post it up for us. Tom's just such a class act and I love reading what he has to say.

Thank you for compiling all of this!

It really is a great interview. BTW, you can get your own copy, if you want. TV Week will send you one, for the cover price plus S&H. Just email them with a request, and they'll tell you what to do.

Thanks so much for the scans! It´s a great service to us aliens from abroad. ;)

Wow, I didn´t know that Tom was interested in writing too. That´s interesting. The man is really ambitious. But, my dearest Tom, please do not take the SV writers as role models: look for more creative and competent people! Everything else on SV was great, only the writing was often subpar... :(

I´ve always been amused by Jonathans´s famous "parenting grip" on Clark´s shoulder. Eacht time I had to giggle in anticipation: "I bet that now comes the grip, and yes, there it is!". It was fun each time. I never thought it had a deeper meaning. I thought it was just an acting quirk à la "Straight adult men can´t possibly hug and kiss, so we need another symbol of affection". LOL

I´m not really happy with the Rosenbaum quote. It seemed to me that the idea that Clark is the big screw up, possibly even the one who screwed up Lex, was one the writers really toyed with too often, and I´ve hated it with a passion. And while I completely understand that bringing back as many of the friends you´ve worked with before as possible may have been a wonderful thing for everyone on a personal level, I do believe that it was not good for the storyline of S10.

Otherwise I could listen to Tom all day long. The Fallon and Dover interviews were such revelations because I´ve never seen Tom as relaxed before. There was always a hint of reservation or shyness in the earlier interviews. But now he let us in on his real fun self... *sigh*

WORD to that! As much as I love Tom, I HATE that he brought that (sorry Tom) utterly wrong quote back again. I hated it when MR said it and while I can understand, somehow, why MR would like to think that, I simply can't believe that Tom finds it "interesting" enough to still dwell on it. Oh, well, I must, and shall, respect their opinion but I really WISH that a concept that has always brought so much pain to us, Clark fans, were NEVER uttered by Tom again.

Sorry for the outburst but I realize that, for a Clark fan, that's a wound that, for some reason, is never allowed to heal.:(

Thank you so much for the scans! (and for some of the quotes. lol) I love what Tom says about CR and about being an actor first. He wants to write too? That's awesome! But, as jaypat said, I hope the SV writers don't become a role model for him. :D

Of course I adore seeing Tom on another mag cover! And I hope he continues this trend of talking to the media.

How can YOU manage to give us so much Tom goodness? You are a treasure! *Hugs*

Every time Tom reaffirms that he will continue to act, my heart soars. I haven't completely let go of my worry that he'll disappear behind the cameras, but I'm getting awfully close.

I so admire the deep respect Tom had for CR, and his generosity in expressing it. It reminds me of the open enthusiasm he showed for the new Superman movie in his recent radio interview. For him it's never been about making comparisons or competing for fans. He embraces everyone.

You know I had to track this magazine down as soon as I heard about it! But I never expected such a wonderful interview.

Thanks for the scans.

Tom Welling is such a damned good interview. Its not about agreeing with everything he says. Its just how eloquently he expresses himself, and how he talks about the people he works with. One of the things I always loved about Tom was that he always seemed just as much concerned with the other characters and their arcs as his own. I don't think any other actor on the show ever gave me that impression to that degree.

He's such a class act.

You know, Val, I love Clark so much that not even Tom can mess with my boy. lol

But of course I agree that Tom is a class act. :)

So wonderful of you to scan and share this with everyone. I can't get enough when it comes to Tom interviews. I love *finally* getting to hear his perspective on things - even though I don't always agree 100% with him.

As Val said, his sincere concern for others - whether guest stars or regulars - always comes through so strongly. I love that so much about him.
tariel22 From: tariel22 Date: May 10th, 2011 07:41 pm (UTC) (Link)
After all those years where interviews were a rarity and I never even dared hope to see Tom on a talk show again, I'm completely overwhelmed by everything he has done to promote the finale. This has been an amazing year for Tom fans. We've seen him at the Upfronts, SDCC, the TCAs, the 200th episode party, and now this flurry of interviews and appearances as Smallville comes to a close. He's been incredibly generous with his time, and I will be forever grateful for all he's given us in this final season, both on and off the screen.

Tom seems truly unique in the entertainment world. He doesn't act anything like what one would expect from a guy who has been the star of a TV show for ten years, with all the power, celebrity, and financial success that comes with that. How can anyone not love him?

Wow, this is so wonderful. Thank you so much for posting this.

I really loved Tom's quote about the way he would put his arm on a younger actor's shoulder and the way he tried to mimic Jonathan. I really, really love that.

It really moves me in ways that I can't even properly describe that this show consistently embraced the idea that it does not make a man less "masculine" or "strong" if he shows physical affection to the people he loves. And I think we saw that exhibited in so many ways throughout the way. But I think it started with Jonathan and Clark. I really loved it that Jonathan was a father who would put his arms around his child and hold his child and kiss him and show that love in physical ways. And I loved that Clark, as Jonathan and Martha's son, grew into a man that wasn't afraid or threatened by hugging his friends (even his male friends) or being held or offering a hand of comfort to someone who needed it.

I just really really love the way this show, in so many little ways, defied gender stereotypes in ways that are so often ignored in particularly in this genre. I love that this show had the courage, through both Jonathan and Clark, to defy our view of what it means to be "masculine" and show that the strongest man in the world is comfortable showing affection and love to those around him and that it does not in any way threaten his masculinity. I just can't express how much I love that and how much that meant to me about Clark as a character.
tariel22 From: tariel22 Date: May 10th, 2011 07:55 pm (UTC) (Link)
I do think a lot of that physical affection came from John Schneider, rather than anything in the script, and I love that Tom was inspired to have Clark follow Jonathan's example in that regard. Obviously any show has hundreds of people, most of them unsung heroes, whose contributions make its success possible, but I will always believe that it was the actors who made the biggest difference on Smallville. The characterizations of Clark, Jonathan, Lex, and Lionel belong to the actors who brought them to life, and none of them fits the stereotypical mold we could easily have seen with a different actor in the role.

Thank you for the scans and info on ordering TV Week! I was hoping someone would get their hands on it and post the scans, as always, T to the rescue!

Tom is a great interview! I have been delighted and thoroughly enjoyed his appearances and interviews. The only problem is now I want more! Hero Complex has another interview/article they are posting probably tomorrow and there is still the R&K appearance. I hope there is more to the R&K appearance than just talking about the Finale. As you said, Tom fans have been spoiled this year with the Upfront appearance, 200th party and the Finale press tour.

I would be in my glory if he announced his next acting roll...
