What will the CW come up with next? O_o
Remember when I thought THIS promo pic for The Vampire Diaries was maybe borderline inappropriate? Well, just wait until you see the CW's ad campaign for another one of their new shows, The Beautiful Life! Oh, Corbin Bleu, who knew what you were hiding under those cute schoolboy clothes in HSM? Marginally NSFW images behind the cut.

LOL! I think we are all going to be of one mind on that one, Rap! And where are my naked Superheroes?!!
whimsywinx From: whimsywinx Date: August 19th, 2009 11:36 pm (UTC) (Link)
I thought Green Lantern ran around half-naked all the time.

*giggles*

Well, if you mean Green Arrow, yes, he does, and I love that about him. :) But I wouldn't mind a little naked action from the rest of the crew!

Green Arrow . . . uh, right. Guess those pecs of his have more power than I thought.

Whatever lol. It's like the Gossip Girl ads sell sex. I just hate the CW the two shows that get ratings never get promotion.
tariel22 From: tariel22 Date: August 20th, 2009 11:13 am (UTC) (Link)
Agreed. They throw all their money at a few new shows, and ignore the rest. And the huge amounts spent on promoting whatever is the new darling of Dawn's eye never seem to translate into big enough ratings to make the strategy seem even remotely justifiable.

What's worse, though, is what you see here. They don't even try to market the shows on content or substance, they just aim to shock and titillate to get attention, which demeans both the show and the intended audience. I just don't get it.
dawnybee From: dawnybee Date: August 19th, 2009 10:32 pm (UTC) (Link)
I have to apologize to Dawn Ostroff because she doesn't just ignore SV and SPN, she now ignores Gossip Girl and 90210. I've seen MP, VD and now TBL's promos all over the place, but none of the other shows.

And they couldn't ask for a better producer than Ashton Kutcher, he always promotes TBL on Twitter.
tariel22 From: tariel22 Date: August 21st, 2009 01:30 am (UTC) (Link)
It really seems true that Dawn only cares about the shiny new pretty. How did a person with such a penchant for putting all her eggs in one basket ever come to run a network? The shows that succeed on the CW seem to do so in spite of their marketing efforts, not because of them.

The potential power of Twitter is a bit mind boggling. If even a fraction of his millions of followers heed his directive to watch the show, it will make a significant difference in the ratings. Not one that can be sustained though, IMO, because that show looks like crap to me. Corbin's beauty and appeal notwithstanding.

OMG, and because its people naked, then teenage girls are going to flock to turn this on, because being naked must mean they are having sex, and thats what all the teenage girls want to see.

Right?

As someone that was a teenage girl once, I'm embarassed for them. Doubley so if they watch this drivel.
tariel22 From: tariel22 Date: August 21st, 2009 05:24 am (UTC) (Link)
Whenever I see ads like this, I find myself imagining the meeting where they approved the campaign. Just as you point out, what must they think of their desired audience? It's insulting in the extreme to me.

I wonder what the actors thought when they were approached about this photo shoot. Did they want to do it? If not, did they feel they had a choice? Are they proud of these images? They're gorgeous, no question, but all I see when I look at them is exploitation.
ladydreamer From: ladydreamer Date: August 19th, 2009 10:52 pm (UTC) (Link)
Does this show have a plot, or is it just all nude, all the time? :/

This reminds me of those Ebony ads for that game, which started out okay and then devolved into just a pair of boobies in a bra with the words "Wanna play?"
tariel22 From: tariel22 Date: August 21st, 2009 05:50 am (UTC) (Link)
I watched an extended clip of this show at some point, and I don't remember a single nude scene. :) What I do recall is a bunch of stereotypical characters and bad dialogue.

To me this is wrong on so many levels. It disrespects the actors by objectifying them. It implies the show has nothing to offer the viewer except pretty, naked bodies, with the implied sexual activity that goes with them, which disrespects the entire production. And it even smacks of false advertising, by emphasizing something I doubt is the true focus of the show.

But I'm sure there are plenty of people who would tell me to lighten up, that it's just a fun ad campaign that celebrates the beauty of the human body. :/
ladydreamer From: ladydreamer Date: August 21st, 2009 08:51 pm (UTC) (Link)
I agree completely, especially showing the lack of respect for the actors. Unless they have a producing credit and could definitely say NO to the campaign, it's questionable that they were properly able to make that decision without hurting their career.

But I'm sure there are plenty of people who would tell me to lighten up, that it's just a fun ad campaign that celebrates the beauty of the human body.

If so, I hope those same people are celebrating the human body by watching More to Love and thinking, what cute women! They're too good for that boring dude!

Exactly, and I keep wondering about this. Of course we know that Tom, for example, would never agree to a campaign like this, but would he have felt empowered enough to say no when Smallville hadn't yet broadcast its first episode?

If so, I hope those same people are celebrating the human body by watching More to Love and thinking, what cute women! They're too good for that boring dude!

Word. People who talk about celebrating the human body as an excuse for this kind of exploitation also usually have a very specific idea of what a body worth celebrating looks like. :/

Still think those are making us dumber.

By the way, in my SN version (the one we were discussing on Twitter), guess where Bobby's hat would be. *ducks*
tariel22 From: tariel22 Date: August 21st, 2009 06:08 am (UTC) (Link)
That's what they're counting on. Look long enough, and you just might be dumb enough to watch the show!

And that mental picture you're drawing for me just keeps getting better. LOL! Thank you, BTW, for filling my afternoon with fun and giggles yesterday. It was a welcome diversion from the mountain of spreadsheets on my desk.
whimsywinx From: whimsywinx Date: August 21st, 2009 02:36 pm (UTC) (Link)
Glad I could help!

Now, if I can just spend the day not hyperventilating while I wait to interview for my job, that would be a good thing. Also, must remember to turn the snark off for that period of time.
tariel22 From: tariel22 Date: August 21st, 2009 03:45 pm (UTC) (Link)
Ooh, you have an interview? That's exciting! Good luck!

Wow, the last shot especially is quite porny!

I would love to see Tom pose like this but our boy has too much gravitas, bless his heart!

Wow, the last shot especially is quite porny!

It really is. Which is a weird contrast to the uncomfortable, even haunted, look on her face. Maybe these poses and expressions are supposed to reflect the personalities of the characters the actors portray? I have no idea.

I would love to see Tom pose like this but our boy has too much gravitas, bless his heart!

Well, certainly Tom has developed stronger resolve about what he will and won't do over time. I just hope these actors chose to make these ads, and didn't feel compelled in any way.

There are no words. I love your icon. This show will be on against Glee! Bastages. In other news, Ashley Tisdale is on America's Got Talent.
tariel22 From: tariel22 Date: August 21st, 2009 06:37 am (UTC) (Link)
I snagged that icon just because I thought it was funny, but it does seem appropriate for this post, doesn't it? :D

This show is up against Glee? I predict a swift and ignoble end. I wish Corbin every success, of course, but not in something like this appears to be.
starry_dawn From: starry_dawn Date: August 20th, 2009 10:33 am (UTC) (Link)
Um, wow. Is this also meant for the same age group as The Vampire Diaries? Oh, CW. You sure know how to send a message across to today's teens. *facepalm*

And come on, people. Take advantage of the people who are ABOVE 30! *hints*

tariel22 From: tariel22 Date: August 21st, 2009 06:49 am (UTC) (Link)
All their advertising is the same: tease and titillate. I still think the Vampire Diaries pic is HOT, even if I do have my reservations about it, but this ad campaign is just embarrassing, IMO.

I wouldn't want to see any of my beloved boys in such a blatant pose, but I sure wouldn't mind if they sexed things up a bit. I may have a few lines I don't want to see crossed, but I never said I wasn't shallow. ;)

It makes me wonder who they think they are targeting with these ads? *sigh* But, yeah, at least they get promos... *sighs some more*
tariel22 From: tariel22 Date: September 11th, 2009 08:57 am (UTC) (Link)
I think they're doing it wrong. And I don't think they're fooling anyone. I'm willing to bet Supernatural's ratings will far surpass those of any of these new, shiny toys Dawn is trying to titillate us with.

After all, could these naked teenagers take over Twitter the way our boys did? I don't think so!
