What Tom said about Comic-Con!
Tom Welling quoted in the August 10-23, 2009 issue of TV Guide on his appearance at Comic-Con:

"I really didn't know what to expect. It was great. There was a lot of love in that room."

Yay! He had a good time! Of course, we already knew that from the vids of the panel and all those smiley pics, but I still love having it confirmed by the man himself. Here's a scan of the part about Tom; click the thumbnail to see the whole page (there's a short column about what was revealed at the panel).

ETA: This is from another article in the same issue called "Who Makes What." I think talking about Tom's salary is a little invasive, but I'm including it because I'm happy to see that he's doing so well relative to his peers. For an actor on a genre show on the CW, I think that's pretty damn impressive. And I'm assuming this figure doesn't include his compensation as co-executive producer. Click for bigger.

Awww...I'm glad Comic-Con was a positive experience for Tom! :-)

Thanks for sharing! I haven't gotten my TV Guide yet. :-(

He was basking in the glow of the fans' love for him! ♥

He definitely looked like he was enjoying himself, and I loved that they picked a picture of him flashing that mega-watt smile.

I just wish he had given some interviews. Oh Tom :/ Look, Keifer is doing it.

Oh, BTW, when I get around to posting it, I have a great Keifer picture from the 24 panel.

I love the pic they chose! And I love that he got the press!

YOU helped make him feel that way. How cool is that?

Maybe he's loosening up about the whole hermit thing. Baby steps?

I look forward to seeing the rest of your pics!

Thank you for posting.

Did he say that during the panel? I'm wondering if he talked with TV Guide and if there might be a longer interview to come. *crosses fingers*

I was so excited when I saw it, you KNOW I had to share! :D

That was my first thought, too! A sound bite from Tom? Is there more?!

I definitely don't think he said that at the panel, but I suppose they could have caught him momentarily on the way out or something.

*glows* Oh, that's awesome! Tom is such a private petal--I am glad his first experience of Comic-con was positive.
tariel22 From: tariel22 Date: August 6th, 2009 02:29 am (UTC) (Link)
Me, too! I was dreading someone doing something stupid and spooking him. Maybe now he'll come out and play again sometime!

Did he not know how much we LOVE him? :)

I saw that you added the salary list. Tom got a raise! They posted a similar article last year that said he made $150,000 an episode. Tom deserves every penny! :-)

I randomly saw a clip from E! True Hollywood Story or something the other day about the Olsen twins. Apparently, when they were on Full House, they were EACH making $150,000 per episode. I don't know if that was a lower salary or the highest they made.
tariel22 From: tariel22 Date: August 6th, 2009 02:37 am (UTC) (Link)
I think he probably got a lot bigger raise than we're seeing here. My understanding (which could be totally wrong, of course) is that his salary as a producer is a cost to the studio, not the show, so it's not included here.

Whatever salary the Olsen twins made on Full House, it was a tiny drop in the bucket compared to the bazillions of dollars they made off all those direct-to-video movies. But I do think they were the main reason anyone tuned in to that show. ;)
tragicllyhip From: tragicllyhip Date: August 6th, 2009 02:00 am (UTC) (Link)
weird, he made more when they reported it before last year
tariel22 From: tariel22 Date: August 6th, 2009 02:45 am (UTC) (Link)
Google is failing me now, but I remember it as being $150K last year. And I'm sure his new contract is a multi-layered, complex agreement that includes a wealth of compensation that isn't included on that list. I just thought it was interesting how he compares to the rest of the list, and that they find him noteworthy enough to be on the list at all. I suppose he must be the highest paid actor on the CW.

I don't think his salary as co-executive producer is included. I think this is just the actor piece. Suffice to say, I'm pretty sure they backed up the proverbial Brink's truck to get Tom to sign on for two more years. ;)
luvmax1 From: luvmax1 Date: August 6th, 2009 02:22 am (UTC) (Link)
My issue came today. I was so happy to see some Smallvilel coverage. But those salaries are outrageous- can you believe what Kiefer Sutherland makes? No actor (not even my beloved Tommy!) is worth that! How about they spread some of that money to teachers, cops and firefighters?
tariel22 From: tariel22 Date: August 6th, 2009 02:54 am (UTC) (Link)
Some of them are pretty mind-boggling, aren't they? And I've read that Kiefer makes as much as a producer as he does as an actor! I didn't include the list for comedy shows, but Charlie Sheen makes $875,000 per episode for Two and a Half Men! O_o
dm_wyatt From: dm_wyatt Date: August 6th, 2009 02:26 am (UTC) (Link)
It makes me wonder what he was thinking would happen...

But I'm glad he had a good time and it was a better experience than he'd expected. Hopefully it'll mean he'll brave doing future events like that.

As for the compensation, I would think that's just his acting fee. He probably gets more to produce and then there's the cut of the DVD sales and any potential film roles he may have been guaranteed for later....

I think he's making a lot more than 175,000 an episode when all that is figured in.
tariel22 From: tariel22 Date: August 6th, 2009 03:06 am (UTC) (Link)
Maybe he was afraid he would get tackled by a Flying!Fangirl, the way his friend Jensen was the first time he went to Asylum. :) We all know how crazy some fans can be.

I, too, hope this will inspire him to venture out a bit more. Comic-Con was a dream come true for Tom fans. Can you even imagine how heavenly a serious print interview would be?

I agree, I'm sure he made a mega-deal to sign on again, and I think he deserves every penny, however much it is. There is no show without him.
serenography From: serenography Date: August 6th, 2009 02:40 am (UTC) (Link)
It sounds to me like maybe he was worried about the reception he'd receive. I'm SO glad it was all positive and love-filled. Let's hope he's less skittish about getting that gorgeous face out there more!

Thanks for sharing this!
tariel22 From: tariel22 Date: August 6th, 2009 03:15 am (UTC) (Link)
I think he must have been apprehensive. And I love what Val said about how it seemed like the crowd was on their best behavior, appreciative of what this rare appearance represented, and careful not to scare him back into hiding.

I was so thrilled to see Tom's face when I opened my TV Guide! How could I NOT share the squee? :)

Yay, I'm so glad he had fun and felt the love!

And he's worth every penny!

Yay, I'm so glad he had fun and felt the love!

Me, too! At first I assumed that when he said he didn't know what to expect, he meant he was worried something weird or bad might happen, but now I'm beginning to wonder, did he honestly not know what kind of reception he would get? Is it possible he didn't realize how adored he is?

And he's worth every penny!

I agree. He's my hero, on and off the screen.

I loved his reaction to the outpouring of love for him. Those big, boyish smiles. The way he blushed and looked down, humbled. The way his eyes kept sweeping the crowd, to take it all in. And the way he leaned into the microphone, eager to connect with his audience. I, too, hope that this experience will leave him a little less reluctant to reach out to his fans.

I'm so happy he had a good time! I'm sure he realizes now, if he didn't before, how much we LOVE and respect him! I'm sure that he made an effort to go to CC and he was both relieved and satisfied afterwards. (I totally can understand him, since I too tend to be uncomfortable if I am among, or in front of, a lot of people. That was partly the reason why I changed professions. Let's hope that doesn't happen to Tom!)

IMO he should be making much more money. He deserves every penny he gets! (Other actors on that list, not so much. lol)
tariel22 From: tariel22 Date: August 6th, 2009 08:46 am (UTC) (Link)
I'm sure that he made an effort to go to CC and he was both relieved and satisfied afterwards.

I think you're exactly right, Carol. In his newly acknowledged leadership position, he decided that joining his colleagues to introduce and promote S9 was important, and he stepped up to make it happen. And I think it paid off in ways he never imagined. I haven't seen this level of excitement in the Smallville fandom in a long, long time. He's the star of this show in every way, and much like the character he portrays, he inspires with his mere presence.

IMO he should be making much more money. He deserves every penny he gets!

I agree, and I hope he's already making much more than the figure in the article indicates. I hope his salary as an actor on the show is just the tip of the iceberg of everything they gave him to sign on for another two years!

Oh Tom, if you only knew how much everyone adores you. &hearts
So glad he had a good time.

And woah, first Comic-Con, now short quotes/statements! Will the wonders ever sees? Can we hope for an interview this year? *fingers crossed*
tariel22 From: tariel22 Date: August 6th, 2009 08:56 am (UTC) (Link)
I just feel ridiculously happy that he had the chance to get a taste of all the love the fans have for him.

When I saw his face in TV Guide, with a QUOTE no less, I was blown away. I don't think Tom has ever used a publicist, but now that he's a producer, I wonder if the WB publicity machine is working to get his name out there. That pic they used is one of the official WB ones. I find it all very interesting!
starry_dawn From: starry_dawn Date: August 6th, 2009 11:55 am (UTC) (Link)
Yay! I would've liked more Tommy quotes, but I guess this is a big thing for him!

But holy crap, that's a LOT of money. o.O
tariel22 From: tariel22 Date: August 6th, 2009 04:24 pm (UTC) (Link)
Even a single quote is HUGE for him, IMO.

I think he deserves even more. :)
bananabehr From: bananabehr Date: August 6th, 2009 03:06 pm (UTC) (Link)
You could tell he was having fun! And OMFG is that man HOTT in person...

Anyway, I know that Kiefer gets so much for 24 because he's an executive producer and he's in about 90% of the scenes, but some of those other numbers don't make much sense.

Anyway... keep up the coverage, it reminds me I need packing materials!
tariel22 From: tariel22 Date: August 6th, 2009 04:29 pm (UTC) (Link)
I'm so glad he enjoyed himself! And jealous happy for you that you got to see the hotness in person! :)

I've heard that Kiefer's $500K per episode is just for the acting part, and that he gets that much again for being an executive producer. But I guess it's all relative to how much the show makes for the network and the studio.
ophelia_77 From: ophelia_77 Date: August 6th, 2009 04:51 pm (UTC) (Link)
I'm so happy that Tom had a pleasant experience. I give credit to the panel's moderator Jeph Loeb. He did an excellent job of keeping the pace and tone of the conversation on target, of making sure all panelists had a chance to participate and protecting Tom and company from silly, uncomfortable questions. (Like the one about which actress Tom likes most.)

I would imagine if there's a Season 10, Tom would consider going again. So maybe you should consider going to Comic Con with us next year. I'm just saying! *wink*
tariel22 From: tariel22 Date: August 7th, 2009 10:26 am (UTC) (Link)
I agree, Jeph Loeb did a great job moderating. I especially admired how he would interject to make things better, like when he turned that tired old question about Tom's initial reluctance into an interesting one by asking for each actor's audition story, and when he smoothed over that awkward question about Tom's personal life by bringing up the news that he would direct two episodes this season.

Unfortunately, as long as I'm in my current job, I pretty much can't go to Comic-Con. :( July is a black-out month for vacation in my department. Which is really too bad, because I could even stay with my mom! I grew up in Point Loma, and my mom's house is about a 15-minute drive from the San Diego Convention Center.

Wow...thanks for sharing this!!!! Its so nice to read a quote from Tom and to think its about his ComicCon appearance too! I hope this means he'll go again next year *crosses fingers* and I hope this means the actually gave a little interview with TV Guide!!! You never know right?
