What do you want the news to be?
Ask Ausiello, January 6, 2009, 11:28 PM

Question: Any news as to whether Tom Welling has signed on for another season of Smallville? -- Scarlett

Ausiello: Yes, there's news, and it's good. Some would even call it, ahem, super. According to a well-placed Smallville insider, Welling is nearing a deal to return for a ninth season. I'm told they're just ironing out some minor deal points, such as should the Brinks Truck pull into the actor's driveway, or just unload on the street.

Regardless of anything I've said in the past about thinking it was time for Tom to move on, or hoping to see him on the big screen, I got the biggest thrill when I read these words. It just makes me feel like Tom is enjoying himself on the show if he's even considering staying on, and that makes me ridiculously happy. Plus, I can't deny I'd love to see him on my television screen every week for another season. I didn't feel that way when the season started, but the past ten episodes have changed my mind. I know it's just a rumor, but I hope it's true.

I'm totally happy as long as Tom is happy. I was kind of starting to worry what I'd do next year if there was no Smallville. I know fanfic would continue to be generated but it just wouldn't be the same.

I'm totally happy as long as Tom is happy.

That's exactly how I feel. And if he thinks another year is a good idea, I'm inclined to trust him on that. He's never struck me as someone who would do something just for the paycheck.

Wow, this is my first time ever commenting on something so early. Thank you for your reply to my comments on the Instinct review. I know that it was too much to reply to and must have been difficult.

So please don't hate me but I am simply going to speak my mind and state my first reaction. I don't know why but a part of me was really disappointed to hear this rumour. Now, don't get me wrong. You know that I have LOVED Smallville, I have never followed a show for such a long period in my life. And I LOVE Tom. But I can't help thinking that the fans are missing out on the opportunity to see Tom on the big screen in something else. I LOVE Clark and Tom's portrayal but it's been eight years. Every season since the fifth they've been saying that it might be the last and I would have been fine with it ending this year. It doesn't take place in Smallvlle anymore and I dislike the jokes about the cape, etc.

I suppose I'm being really selfish here. I'm glad that Tom is happy and considering it, but I hope he didn't do it out of fear, complacement or money. Now, I know that Tom probably didn't do it for the money so if he feels a ninth season is a good idea then fine. I'm just sort of disappointed that he's not ambituous enough to say "I want to carve out my own legacy and do something else besides Smallville" Smallvlle films for eight to nine months of the year which just means that it's less likely that Tom will be in another motion picture through 2010. I'll probably be happy with this rumour in a week because I think I would really miss Smalville eventually but the CW has to treat it better as well. I'm just afraid that there is this outside possibility of me eventually hating Smallville. That sounds ridiculous but it happened with the Simpsons. I used to love that show and the characters and now I can't stand it. I don't think this will happen because I have been enjoying this season thus far, especially Odyssey, Instinct, Committed, and Bloodline.

I'm sorry for ranting...it's not that Tom's talent is being wasted on Smallville. His performances as Clark, Clark on red kryptonite, and Bizarro are brilliant! I just want more, I really do. I want him to move on and for Smallville to go out with a blast instead of dragging it on. Lois and Clark are already happening and the Daily Planet is in full swing. Clark just needs to create his costume, with the help of Martha hopefully, and that's the end. There's not more to tell without becoming Superman. A 90-minute finale could wrap everything up I'm sure with the help of the remaining episodes. Seeing Tom and Erica every week on my television is awesome but I would trade it in for a good romantic comedy for both at this point. There's just no gurantee that things will happen after a 9th season of Smallville. I suppose I'm frustrated that such a beautiful and talented man is going to be playing the same character for another year, no matter how good Tom is, and has no ambitions to go to the big screen. I know that Tom may go into directing anyway but one or two good roles in feature films in the near future and I would be happy. I would probably enjoy a season 9 as I find episodes to like in every season. Thank you for listening Tariel!

My reaction to the news took me by surprise. You say you're being selfish, and I suppose I am, too. I've enjoyed this season of Smallville more than any other, and I just want more of Tom. If he said tomorrow he'd rather be making movies, I'd be praying for him to say no to the show. But I'm afraid he'll disappear behind the camera, and I'll take another year of Smallville before that happens in a heartbeat.

I don't know Tom at all, of course, but I don't see him as someone who would sign a new contract out of insecurity, or just for the money, or even because his failure to do so would essentially put everyone else on the show out of work. If he signs, I have to assume it's because he was able to negotiate a deal that makes him happy.

If there is going to be a S9, though, I think we're looking at a very dark ending to S8, and a torturous summer before we come back. I'm a little nervous about how they might handle that.

Feel free to rant, I don't mind. I like to hear everyone's viewpoint, and to consider all the concerns people have. That's part of the fun! :)

You beat me to it! :-) Although I think I'll post this in my lj anyway. Like you said, as much as I want to see Tom in movies, it did make me happy to see that it's very likely that we'll be seeing Tom on our TV every week for another year.
tariel22 From: tariel22 Date: January 7th, 2009 07:03 pm (UTC) (Link)
If he signs, I hope he holds out for a producer credit, and not in name only. I think his leadership can only enhance the show.
drusplace From: drusplace Date: January 7th, 2009 12:14 pm (UTC) (Link)
Really? So it's not a done deal yet but could be? HUH. Well this season HAS been better for Tom. He looks better, he's acting even better and all of this may be tied into the fact that we seem to be getting NEW stories instead of the same plotline over and over again.

*still misses Lex though*
tariel22 From: tariel22 Date: January 7th, 2009 07:11 pm (UTC) (Link)
I do think this has been the best year in a long time for both Clark and Tom. At least so far. I'd love another season full of episodes like the first ten of S8.

I miss Lex, too. And I just miss seeing Michael act. Lex remains my favorite role of his, so I've been rewatching some of my favorite Lex episodes lately. Last night I watched Onyx, and it made me happy and sad at the same time. I reveled in his performance once again, but mourned his absence anew. *sighs*

I'm still undecided. I'm happy for Tom and I'm happy that we might just get another year of watching our pretty cast back again (everyone's coming back, right?), but I just feel that story-wise they're going to start slacking big time with another season. Clark's already in the Daily Planet, Lois is already falling in love with him ... how can they possibly stretch this out for another 22 episodes?
tariel22 From: tariel22 Date: January 7th, 2009 07:41 pm (UTC) (Link)
I actually have high hopes that it won't be a case of stretching things out, and I think they would have to have an overall plan for the season already, something they could show to Tom to convince him to stay. And I don't think it has to be about romance.

You raise an interesting point about everyone coming back. If they're giving Tom more money, does that mean they have to make even more cuts somewhere else? I've already seen people speculate that they'll get rid of Erica, but I don't see that happening. I have heard that with a S9 in place, PS3 plans to give Clark his darkest time ever, something Sam Witwer alluded to as far back as Comic-Con. Will they have Doomsday kill Clark? Will they kill Chloe? I don't know what to think.
christina_kat From: christina_kat Date: January 7th, 2009 02:20 pm (UTC) (Link)
I'm really happy about that!!I really want to see TW to do movies but I would love to see another year in Smallville!
I mean it has to be more time for Lois and Clark...We are in the 10th episode and Clois is still on hold...since Erica is not going to be in the next 5 episodes!

Yay SV!
tariel22 From: tariel22 Date: January 7th, 2009 08:01 pm (UTC) (Link)
To be honest, I'd rather see Tom on the big screen, but if he wants to keep doing Smallville, I'm thrilled to be able to see him every week. I never thought he would agree to stay, and I was surprised at my giddy reaction to the news that he might! I hope they make an official announcement soon.
jeannev From: jeannev Date: January 7th, 2009 02:49 pm (UTC) (Link)
My feelings about this are very complicated. I'm contemplating doing a post about it on my lj, but that feels a bit like overkill given how many of my flisties posted this news.

My initial reaction was "Yay! Another year of beautiful Tom, and my Clark" and "Good, because going by spoilers, they certainly weren't using the back half of the eps to good use to bring this series to a close".

But then, I got really sad, because of what I think this says about Tom, and his ambitions. This very likely means another year of Tom doing no interviews, no publicity, being all but invisible except for SV. And if he's signing for another year, that likely means this is what he wants. Which also likely means that he doesn't really have any major ambitions of a bigger career in front of the camera. Because he's not a stupid guy, and he's got to know that he's flying so far under the radar, he might as well be off of it. And apparently, thats fine with him. Movie star Tom? I think signing for a S9 makes that very unlikely. And so, I'm sad. :(

But hey, I'll have another year to enjoy him, probably.

As usual, you raise a good point. Another year of Silent Tom? :-(
I certainly wouldn't mind reading more of your thoughts on this in your lj. You always provide me with different ways of looking at things.

What if his new contract also gives him some kind of movie deal with Warner Brothers? That'd be nice.

I wonder about his personal life. Not that it's my business of course, but do he and Jamie want kids? I would imagine that they would stay childless while he's still on SV and super busy for 9 months out of the year. I've never quite figured out- does Jamie live with him in Vancouver (at least part-time? Do they take turns flying to Vancouver or L.A. on the weekends? From what we know, Tom usually has a six day work week anyway.

Maybe they don't want kids and he's happy just playing with his sisters' kids. Who knows?

I'd wager that you could guess my reaction to this rumor. Reading the rumor made me go 'nnnnoooooooo'. I was looking forward to Smallville wrapping up. I want to see how it finishes, but I'm not getting a whole lot of enjoyment from watching the episodes these days, as you know. (We're such opposites!)

tariel22 From: tariel22 Date: January 7th, 2009 08:54 pm (UTC) (Link)
I know we probably couldn't see the show more differently. And of course opinions are so subjective. I've been praising Tom's acting all season, and noting that to me he seems much happier and more relaxed in his performance, resulting in a Clark who I find more believable, more relatable, and funnier. But just the other day I went to the Tom thread on TWoP for the first time in months, and there seems to be a consensus over there that his acting is the worst it's ever been, he's struggling to make sense of the scripts he's being given, and that he looks bored out of his mind. The only thing the TWoP posters and I agree on is that Tom's never looked better than he does in Clark's DP wardrobe! :) So maybe I just see what I want to see. I honestly don't know.

I do think it would be hard to wrap up the series in a satisfactory way in the five unspoiled episodes we have left, and that's another reason I'm open to S9. It's funny, though, I still remember how outraged I was when the new show runners first mentioned the possibility of another season. I just about had a heart attack! :)
goodvibe From: goodvibe Date: January 7th, 2009 05:12 pm (UTC) (Link)
I just read about this on eeyore's lj, and my initial reaction was shock. Now that shock is settling in somewhat, I'm undecided as to how to really approach this news. To be perfectly honest, I wanted SV to end this season, if only because creatively its been on a high, and ratings have been more than decent for a show in its 8th season on a network such as the CW. There would be no more appropriate a time to go out with a bang, so to speak, than under present circumstances. Because I have to wonder - can the show still entertain in the 9th season? Will the ratings be as steady? And worse case scenario of all - the ratings are so dismal that a 9th season is cancelled midway, depriving fans, therefore, of a proper ending.

OTOH, I look at how good the first half of this season has been, and it assures me that perhaps the showrunners can make it work next season. I also look at upcoming spoilers and part of me wants a season 9 then, because the spoilers seem to indicate an unsatisfactory culmination of a potentially final season. And as for ratings, I figure we're left with the really core, loyal SV audience now anyways. They're going to keep watching regardless, right till the end. So might as well go for a 9th.

Speaking purely as TW fan too, I'm conflicted. Because a part of me is delighted that I'll get to ogle and appreciate him for another tv season. But another part of me was really ready for him to move on, so as a fan I could move along with him - to what I hoped would be atleast a little more high profile stuff, meaning media sightings, at the very least.

I'm sorry about taking up so much space! I guess I'm more invested, and consequently more torn about this than I imagined.

This is exactly how I feel. I was shocked to read the news, too, but was also immediately flooded with a giddy fangirl excitement that seemed to come out of nowhere. I have to conclude that subconsciously I've been rooting for this all along. :) Which is not all that surprising, considering how much I've enjoyed this season so far.

Of course I want to see Tom move on and grow as an actor, and I long to be there to see the performances he has to give in other roles that take him places Clark Kent never could (Val's vision of a drinking, smoking, shirtless Tom sexing up the screen with an ambiguous moral character, lots of swear words, and plenty of sleeping around comes deliciously to mind). I wish he would give us even a hint of what his career goals are, so I could know if that dream has even a slim chance of ever coming true. The man is a complete mystery, which obviously is exactly what he prefers.

Please don't ever apologize for a long comment. I always enjoy reading your thoughts, and the longer the better!

If Tom is there for a ninth season I'd watch but I've said it before as much as I'll miss seeing him every week but if he thinks he needs to move on. Then so be it. I don't necessarily think he's going to continue acting but he does seem to be happy this season which I'm glad for.

If he decides not to continue with Smallville, then I support him 100% in that, but if he decides to stay I'll be thrilled. I hope he wants to keep on acting after the show is over, but I also hope I can be happy for him no matter what he decides to do.

Truth be told, I'm ready to see Tom move onto the big screen (much as I love his Clark.)

I wonder if Tom is also taking the crew into consideration? If the show ends, the crew would be out of work, which be tough in the current economic climate. There are fewer movies & shows being shot in Vancouver because of the falling US dollar. I can imagine Tom feeling responsible for the crew & doing a 9th season on their behalf.

Whatever happens, I hope Tom makes the decision that is best for him!

Honestly, I am, too. But I have no confidence he wants to do so, even though he has said he does in the past. If S9 is going to be my last chance to see Tom act on a regular basis, I'll take it. So I say, whatever he decides to do, I'll be happy.

I can imagine Tom feeling responsible for the crew & doing a 9th season on their behalf.

You're not the first person I've seen suggest this, and certainly Tom has shown how much he cares for other people, and how seriously he takes his responsibilities. That said, however, I hope he would never stay just for the sake of others. That's not fair to anyone, and if his heart isn't in it, he should just say no. It's the nature of the industry that shows end and people have to find new work. Michael did what was best for him, and even though the show can't continue without Clark, I hope Tom does the same. Just as you say. :)

I'm happy you're so happy about this! My own personal reasons for being glad of this news is that maybe, this will increase the chances that Michael Rosenbaum would be willing to come back as Lex for a few episodes next season---or for the series Finale!!

Hey, I can only hope.....here in the throes of a deep, dark Michael-withdrawal!

I thought of that, too. I personally love tasabian's idea of an AU where Lex has hair, so Michael doesn't have to shave his head. It would be a win-win!

I'm going through some serious Michael withdrawal myself. I'm just thankful that he loves to be out and about, so we at least have the opportunity for new pics and stories. But what I really want is to see him act, preferably in films.

As much as I love the show, TW and AM, I think it would be a bad idea to extend it another season. It seems to me that when your hugely loyal fan base is debating and not clearly on board, then you may have overstayed your welcome. They always say its best to leave them wanting more and I think Smallville is getting past that point.

Of course, if they come back, I'll be there every Thursday. But that does set up the scenario that both SMV and SPN could end in the same year. If that happens I will seriously need some Xanax.
tariel22 From: tariel22 Date: January 16th, 2009 02:17 am (UTC) (Link)
Hi! *hugs you tight* I guess it looks like the CW may not want Smallville back, and they're not making any commitments until the Upfronts, which are after filming has ended for the season. So we may very well get an ambiguous ending to the entire series, which will suck. I really wanted to see them do an entire season, or maybe a final half season, where we get the pay-off we've been waiting for all these years, and see Clark's final steps to becoming the Man of Steel. *sighs*

I'm hoping Supernatural's position is more secure, with their ratings going up this season, but I don't know. Dawn Ostroff doesn't seem to like either one of our shows much. Idiot.
